The eighth annual White Plains Shrine Club Softball Tournament was played last Saturday and Sunday at Jake Early and Davidson Parks in Kings Mountain. Fourteen teams entered the tournament and Jake's of Gastonia won the championship. Second place went to Fletcher's of Belmont and third was Roxy of Kings Mountain. The photos above and at left show some of the activities. At top left are Ned Yarbro, left, President of the White Plains Shrine Club, and Dewitt Guyton, Chairman of the tournament, showing off the championship trophies. At Museum The Cleveland County Historical Museum, located in the old court- house in Shelby, will present a new kite exhibit in the North Hall dur- ing museum hours. The exhibit will feature kites of all kinds and will go into the scien- tific theory behind them. The ex- hibit, researched and developed by the Smithsonian Museum, is on loan from the High Point Historical Museum. The exhibit will be on display through mid-September. Museum hours are 10-5 Tuesday through Friday and 10-2 Saturday. Admission is free. Etters Announce Daughter's Arrival John and Mary Frances Jenkins Etters announce the birth of their daughter, Polly Rebecca, June 23, Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital. Her grandparents are Barry and Nell Jenkins, Bob Etters and Joy Crump, all of Kings Mountain. Fn Baseball Camp Davidson College baseball coach Dick Cooke will lead a sum- mer baseball camp at the Community Center for young peo- ple 8-15 beginning Monday, July 30. 3 Arid The camp will be conducted through Aug. 1 from 9 am. until 4 p.m. daily and is sponsored by KM Parks & Recreation. To register, a $25 deposit must be paid and is non-refundable. Cost of the program is $65 per student. Sign-up by calling 734-0449 or 739-9631. OPTIMIST CLUB The Kings Mountain Optimist Club will meet July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the club house on North Carpenter Street. This is the last meeting before the football season and it's important that every mem- ber attend. Michael C. Edwards, recent graduate of Burns High School, is the re- cipient of the Gardner-Webb College Spangler Leadership Award. He also has received a Presidential Scholarship. Each year, 10 students entering as freshmen are selected as Presidential Scholars. Edwards is the son of David and EDWARDS Presidential Scholars in honor of the college's 10 Presidents. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement, demonstrated leader- ship ability and commitment to ser- vice. Each scholarship is for $5,000 and is renewable for up to three additional years provided the recipient maintains satisfactory academic performance. The Spangler Leadership Award is giv- en each year to one of the At Burns, he was active in the band, Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Science, High Q team and Electronics Technicians Club.
