However, she * warned, she must win her place on the team every year through more tryouts. 2 "The tryouts are tough,” she said. "They had a trial dance team last year which I didn't know any- thing about. A lot of those girls came back and tried out. There were a lot of girls with different kinds of dance styles. The competi- tion was really tough because you really didn't know what the judges were looking for at first. "I plan to try out again next year," she said. "I really enjoy working with everybody and meet- ing the people. I'm looking for a full-time job in Charlotte since I'm over there every night anyway." Paris says she believes the Honey Bees have added a lot of ex- citement to Hornets' games. "The crowds seem really excited about it," she said. "That's one of the main reasons we're performing at all the home games now." Dancing is nothing new to Paris, who started taking ballet at age three and has continued until now, except for a brief stint in junior high school when she stopped dancing to take piano lessons. At Carolina, she was a member of the natienally-ranked High Kicking Hecls for four years. They performed at all the Tar Heel foot- ball games, at about half of the basketball games, and also took part in national competition. "Dancing is something I've just always loved to do," she says. "This is the first time I've ever done it professionally. It's a lot of fun but it's hard at this level. We have to learn two dances every week and it's rough on people who are working full-time and going to school. We try to do different dances at every game. If we ever repeat one it's one that we did early in the season." ROBINSON From Page 6-A Robinson recalled that the Negro League was a thriving enterprise for owners, but players got very little of the money. His first contract called for a salary of $325 a month from May through September. "But the owners made plenty of money," he said. "Ours was a popular league. We played in the same parks as the major league teams and in a lot of cases we drew better attendance. When our players started going into the majors our attendance dropped and that eventually meant the end of the league." The Homestead Braves, based in Washington, D.C., had a work- ing agreement with the Braves and sent several players to the majors, but other major league clubs wouldn't follow suit. Robinson recalled that many of the Negro League clubs wanted to re- main and Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick was asked to be the commis- . sioner of both leagues. "He said he would if our owners would turn over all the proceeds to him," he said. "The owners wouldn't do it because they knew Ford Frick would give our players their fair share." So, Negro League players who weren't picked up by major league teams wound up playing in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada and other countries. Robinson had a couple of his best years after going to Canada in '52, hit- ting .325 and .349. "It was probably much tougher to play in the Negro League than in the majors,” Robinson said. "We didn't have the same quality equipment as they had. And our guys would throw at you pretty hard. Sam Jones was wild. You'd give him part of the plate or you'd get hurt. He pitched three or four no-hitters after he went up with the Giants." Robinson, who still watches baseball cvery chance he gets, says today's average players don't compare with the major lcague or Negro League players of the past. "We had to play hurt and sick,” he noted. "They get a cramp now and they have to sit down. If we were able to go out on the ficld we had to per- form. "The average player today won't hustle like a Pcte Rose. In our day, ev- ery player hustled like Rose. He'd play if he had a leg broken. And, now players get more in one season than we got in a lifetime. It's all business now." 100 free - Lindsay Suber second (57.52), Israel Angeles third (568.94), Jonathan Jones fifth (1:02.91), Lewis Nantz sixth (1:07.02). 500 free - Chuck Kaylor first (6:28.74), Jay Sloan second (6:55.41). 100 back - Benji Davis first (1:02.55), Aaron Allen third (1:07.75), Dan Messenger fourth (1:17.12). 100 breast - David Messenger first (1:10.01), James Faust third (F1:18.82), Brian Wilson fourth (1:19.70), Patrick Frei fifth (1:27.06), Jeff Taylor sixth (1:28.56).
