BBQ sign inspires traffic Driving down highway 74 in Lowell you'll get a message if you look along the road at Bland's Barbecue. Bill Lane changes the message on his marquee about every two weeks and it usually has something to do with his belief in God. For instance, this week the sign reads: Easter's Coming Soon and So Is Jesus. "It's kind of a passive witness," Lane said, who has been saved for four years. He said his pure mo- tive is to tell people about what Jesus has done in his life, and that motive has taken over priority in his life, even from selling bar- becue. Lane said his business is doing well. "I feel like I've got a hedge around me with the recession," he said. The business came down from his grandfather who opened Bland's in 1953. Lane took over in 1978, when they moved to the location where they are now. Witnessing for Christ has taken priority over Lane's barbecue business. he says. Capacity seating is 39 and they're open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Lane said he serves "all manner" of barbecue and some side sandwiches. The style of barbecue is from western North . Carolina. "We're unique,” he said. "A lot of others have a sweet sauce. Ours is spicy, tangy."
