Student mentors needed If you are a committed, consis- tent, and caring adult who is inter- ested in becoming a mentor for a student in the middle school, Kings Mountain Schools have developed a new program which may be of interest to you. The KM Mentor Program has been developed to provide support- ive, one-on-one relationships for _ students in the middle school who have problems with attendance, discipline and classroom achieve- ment. The goal of the program is to increase the students’ ability to function in school and in society in a constructive way. In order to become a mentor, a person must meet the following re- quirements: 1 - Submit an application to the KM Mentor Program by January 22, 1993. 2 - Participate in a screening process including an interview and a check for criminal offenses. 3 - Participate in a four hour training program and any required in-service training” scheduled dur- ing the year. ~ 4 - Make a commitment to spend at least one period per week with your student for the entire school year. Applications for this program will be available in the office of Kings Mountain Middle School on January 5 and need to be returned to the KM Mentor Program no lat- er than January 22. Recreation Activities The following activities have been scheduled by the Kings Mountain Recreation Department. For more information, call 739- 9631 or 734-0449. Unless other- wise indicated, all events are at the Community Center. un Aerobics - Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30-9:30 a.m.; Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The fee is $10 for inside city residents and $15 for outside city residents. Register between the 1st and Sth of each month. HB Water aerobics - Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m.-12 noon; Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30- 7:30 p.m., Neisler Natatorium. The fee is $10 for Senior citizens, $15 for inside city residents and $22.50 for outside city residents. BM Adult swim class - Adult swim classes are offered the first three weeks of each month at Neisler Natatorium. The time is 7:45-8:45 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Space is limited. BM Open gym - The Community Center gym is open every Friday night from 5-9 p.m. BM Walkers - Due to cooler weather the gym is open each Monday-Friday from 8:30-9:45 a.m. B® Gym hours - The gym is open December 21-23 and December 28-31 for youth only from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m. for general open gym. The gym is open to walkers Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-10 Joins CCC staff ‘Cleveland Community College recently employed Julie Holt of Rock Hill, SC as an in- structor in the = Business Administration and Accounting program. Before joining the facul- ty, Ms. Holt was a staff accountant at the Hettich American Company . in Charlotte. : Hall, Special events planned at CCC Several events are scheduled in January at Cleveland Community College. The Gallery on the campus will exhibit the works of internationally recognized Jim Harrill, Lincoln County native and former resident of Shelby. Harrill divides his liv- ing time between Greece and New Mexico and is currently visiting the family home in Boger City. Santa Claus helped the White Plains Shrine Club entertain chil- dren who had been patients at Shriners Hospital. During 1963-64 he taught painting for the International Council of Europe in Greece. The College is hosting a recep- tion for Harrill January 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of The Gallery. The public is invited. Gospel singing January 10 at Grover church There will be a gospel singing Sunday, January 10 at 6 p.m. at Bible Holiness Church on Highway 226 in Grover. The featured group will be The Winebargers of Lenoir. Rev. Joyce McEntyre, pastor, in- vites the public. Wizard of Oz’ set at college Auditions for the state musical "Wizard of Oz" have been sched- uled in Dover Theatre at Gardner- Webb University.
