Kings Mountain High's wrestlers ran their dual record to 9-0 Saturday by sweeping the Cleveland County Quads at Crest High School. The Mountaineers defeated Shelby 58-12, Burns 64-9 and Crest 56-15 to win their second straight tournament crown. The Mountaineers won the West Lincoln Dual Team Tournament the week before Christmas. Two Kings Mountain wrestlers kept their unbeaten records intact. Robbie Ruff took a hard-fought 10- 9 decision over Fonzie Dawson of Shelby in the opening round and picked up forfeits in matches against Burns and Crest. Heavyweight Shon Byers won three straight first period pins, keeping alive his streak of winning all of his matches this year on pins. Jay Stamper of Crest became the first wrestler this year to score a point against Byers. KM 58, SHELBY 12 103 - Stephen Lemons (KM) won by forfeit; 112 - Binh Davis (KM) p. Ian Jones 2and; 125 - Michael Bell (KM) KM wins SWC opener Kings Mountain High's wrestling team opened defense of its Southwestern 3-A Conference championship Tuesday night with a 60-12 victory over Shelby. Steve Moffitt's charges carried a 1-0 conference and 10-0 overall mark into a home match last night against the unbeaten and two-time defending state champion East Gaston Warriors. East went into the match as the #2 ranked 4-A team in the state and Kings Mountain went into the battle as the #2 ranked 3-A team in the state. Ae sweep Wolves Kings Mountain High's basket- ball teams got the new year off to a good start Tuesday by sweeping Lincolnton in nonconference action at the KMHS gym. The local teams remain at home tonight to face East Lincoln in their final nonconference action. They open Southwestern 3-A . Conference play Friday at home against East Cavaliers. The KM girls, who hadn't played since the week before Christmas, broke the game open in the fourth quarter to run their record to 3-4. The KM defense held Lincolnton without a field goal in the fourth quarter and ran up a 17-4 advan- tage. Kings Mountain had led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, 19-11 at the half and 28-17 going into the fourth quarter. "Heather Harrison led the KM of- fense with 11 points and Tameeka Anderson added 10. Rutherford's BM Justin Jones sank two free throws in the final seconds to lift the Mountaineers to a 67-64 victo- ry in the nightcap. The win boosted KM's record to 6-4 and avenged an earlier loss at Lincolnton. : The game was close throughout, with Lincolnton holding an 18-17 lead after one quarter and the teams tied at 33-all at the half and 47-all going into the fourth quarter. The Wolves, trailing 65-64, turned the ball over twice in the fi- nal 23 seconds and were forced to foul Jones as the clock wound down, ~ Marquiz Williams led the Mountaineers with 19 points, Jones added 17 and Bryan Leftwich 10.
