sacar South Point's Tait Triplett is forded out at third base on a good play by the Kings Mountain defense in Saturday's Western state 3-A championship playoff game at KM's Lancaster Field. Making the put-out for Kings Mountain is third baseman Todd Ware. KM won 6-2. Six-run third inning sparks Mounties over South Point 6-2 Kings Mountain scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat South Point 6-2 for the Western North Carolina 3-A baseball title Saturday night at Lancaster Field. The victory, Kings Mountain's 21st against three losses, advanced the team to the state championship best-of-three series with Asheboro beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Field. South Point ended its year with a 23-5 record. The win gave the Mountaineers their third Western crown in the past 14 years, their sixth overall, and their second in five years un- der Coach Bruce Clark. Over 1,000 fans - one of the largest crowds to ever witness a Kings Mountain home game - saw Mountaineer ace Stephen Fisher win his 24th consecutive victory and the Mountaineers defeat the strong Red Raiders for the third time in four outings this year. South Point had recently beaten the Mounties in the championship game of the SWC tournament. With ace left-hander Tim Brown on the mound, the Raider fans were excited when the Belmont nine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Bryan Hastings RBI single to centerfield. But that thrilling feeling was short-lived, as the Mountaineers came in to bat in the bottom of the inning and sent 11 men to the plate to rock Brown for six runs and five hits. KM also took advantage of a pair of South Point errors. Robbie Ruff drew a one-out walk to get things going. After Ruff stole second, Mike Smith doubled to right-center to tie the score. After Fisher walked, desig- nated hitter David R. Jenkins sin- gled home Smith with the winning run. Caja Ormand beat out an in- field hit to load the bases, and Chris Rider's single to left was booted and all of a sudden the Mountaineers were up 4-1. Rick Marr's sacrifice fly to center made Volunteers needed for baseball event Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department will spon- sor the 9-10 year old state baseball tournament July 23-30). During this week, the depart- ment will need many volunteers to work in admissions, parking, con- cessions, and providing housing for out-of-town teams (two players per home). Anyone interested in volunteer- ing their services should call Denise Leonard at 734-0449 before June 30. From 2 to 28 and you still have that Baby Face! Happy Birthday DEAN HARRIS Love, LeAnn & Brandon it 5-1 and another error on Damon Putnam's ground ball to shortstop closed out the scoring. Fisher, who scattered five hits and struck out seven, retired the Raiders in order in three of the first four innings, and again in the sev- enth. South Point's final run came in the sixth on Brown's single and Jeremy Smith's sacrifice fly. It was Fisher's 12th straight win this year, including all four of the Mountaineer victories in the Western playoffs. Except for the one inning, Brown also hurled a good ball- game. All five of KM's hits off him came in the third. He retired the side in order three times and struck out two. Coach Clark was ecstatic with the victory. "I was extremely pleased with the way we handled the whole week," he said. "Having played them previously three times, it was a necessity that we approach the game in the right way. I thought the kids handled themselves well. Having faced Brown four times was a definite advantage for us. "I thought they might come in here and use another pitcher," he said, "but they didn't. I thought the true character of our team showed through with how we handled the pressure and they didn't. Walks and errors killed them, but at the same time we continued to get clutch hits in situations that they had al- lowed us to be in scoring opportu- nities. "Stephen Fisher continues to amaze me and everybody associat- ed with this program,” he said. "South Point came in and was just tearing the cover off the ball all through the playoffs. He just bat- tled them and battled them and bat- tled them and they ended up get- ting five hits." Again, Clark said, the hometown crowd played a big role in the vic- tory. It just con- tinues to be a great privilege for us to play in front of people that really like to see young kids succeed and see them advance year after year in the playoffs.
