3 B { 3 tT Tm Winners announced in Mountain Fest runs Brian Clark, who was clocked by race organizer Geeper Howard at 16 minutes, 55 seconds, and Jackie Houston, who was clocked at 23 minutes, four seconds, were the big winners in the 5K run at Mountain Fest Saturday. The overall winners in the 10-K event were Bill Peavy, who reached the finish line in 37 min- utes, 23 seconds, and Lisa Neisler, who finished in 46 minutes, 50 sec- onds. The winners of the fun run were Kenny Houston, first; Patrick Brogdon, second; and Gray Howard, third. KM Dixie Boys defeat Tryon 14-3 Kings Mountain's 13-14 year old Dixie Boys defeated Tryon at DAvidson Park Saturday, 14-3. Rusty Putnam pitched all five in- mings, striking out five and walking one. Jason Putnam, Wes Blanton, Ray Biddix, Bo Walker, Rusty Putnam, and Bradley Philbeck each scored twice. Bo Walker had two doubles and a triple. On Monday, Kings Mountain defeated Gastonia First Baptist 14- 5. Rusty Putnam pitched three innings, striking out seven; Ray Biddix pitched two innings, strik- ing out four. Jason Putnam was 2-f9r-3, Ray Biddix 3-for-3 with a double and home run, Wes Blanton 2-for-3 with a triple, Bo Walker 2-for-3, . Baseball camp planned at Community Center The Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for its fourth annual baseball camp for ages 8-17. It will be held at the Community Center June 14-18 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Bag lunches are required. The purpose of the camp is to in- troduce and teach the proper me- chanical and mental fundamentals vital to the development of young baseball players. Campers will be exposed in detail to every aspect of the game in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Instructor will be Scott Rash, head baseball coach at Greensboro College. He will lead a staff of top college and high school coaches in- cluding Mike Lawson, head base- ball coach at Central Davidson High School. N Cost is $85. A $25 deposit is re- quired. The deposit is refundable until a week before the camp. The cost includes instruction, insurance and a shirt. Enrollment is limited. For more information, call the Community Center at 739-0449. Weeks wins fifth straight Gaffney race GAFFNEY, S.C. - It seems Ricky Weeks can do no wrong at Cherokee Speedway this season. He won his fifth straight Super Late Model race and eighth of the season Saturday night. Track officials made Weeks start in the rear Saturday but the '92 track champion roared through the field and took the lead from Mike Duvall with just two laps remain- ing to pocket the $2,000 prize. Doug Sanders appeared to be on his way to his second win of the season as he set the pace for 26 laps, only to have to pit with a flat right rear tire with only four laps remaining. Duvall held on to finish second. Jeff Smith of Kings Mountain, making his first start since destroy- ing his car six weeks ago, finished third. Sanders came back through the field to finish fourth and Hot Rod LaMance was fifth. Tim Goode won his first Thunder and Lightning win of the year; Ryan Owens nipped Bruce Absher in the Baby Bomber race, Lynn Holloway won the Super Modified Four race, Scott Ellis won the Stock Four after a protest, and Kevin Tessneer won the Pure Stock. City Recreation Activities Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department has announced the following programs. Cole and Alvarez voted top honors Kings Mountain High School tennis coach Chris Cole was voted 1993 Coach of the Year in the Southwestern 3-A Conference. The Mountaineer tennis team captured its third consecutive con- ference championship, going unde- feated in the conference at 6-0. The team was led by Andres Alvarez, who was voted SWC Player of the Year. Nottsger, first; Charles Vinson, second; Gene Casell, third.
