Rudd wins first as driver/owner LOUDON, NH - Ricky Rudd posted his first win as a car owner Sunday, edging Dale Earnhardt to win the. Slick 50 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. In his first year as a NASCAR Winston Cup series owner and driver, Rudd completed a quick pit stop on lap 268, passed Earnhardt for the lead with six laps remain- ing and held on to win by 69-hun- dredths of a second. Rudd has won at least one NASCAR event every year since 1983. His last victory was the Miller Genuine Draft 400 on June 20, 1993. Crew Chief Bill Ingle called the two-tire only pit stop in a go for broke effort to get Rudd better track position over Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace, who made a four- tire change. The decision paid off as the Tide sponsored Ford Thunderbird moved from eighth to third place and in contention at the finish. Rudd led early in the race and displayed patience as he kept his car in contention and avoided the many wrecks that brought out 17 caution flags. Pole sitter Ernie Irvan led the most laps and appeared on his way to victory until wrecking with 25 laps to go. Irvan entered the race leading in the series point stand- ings but left trailing Eamhardt by four points. Earnhardt gained 92 points by finishing second and Irvan 30th. . Rusty Wallace was third, with Mark Martin, Todd Bodine, Morgan Shepherd, Ted Musgrave, Kyle Petty, Rick Mast and Sterling Marlin completing the top ten.
