HERNDON Evelyn Dixon Herndon, 80, of Kings Mountain, died September 26, 1994 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby. A native of Kings Mountain, she wis the daughter of the late Butler and Fairy Whisnant Dixon Phifer, and wife of the late William Frank Herndon. She was a homemaker and member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William “Roy" and Libby Herndon and Ray Butler and Jean herndon. all of Kings Mountain, and Coyte and Sarah Herndon of Shelby: three sisters, Ruby Sides of LaPort, Towa, and Ethel Ellwood and Nell Jones of Charlotte; eight grandchil- dren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Harold Beam, Norman Brown and Wray Barrett Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. JACK A. BROWN SHELBY - Jack Aaron Brown, 54, of 1213 Maple Springs Church Road, died September 26, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Stokesdale, he was the son of A.W. and Elizabeth Cotrell Brown, both of Stokesdale. He was retired from Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company and as manager of the Gastonia office. For 15 years he served as PA announc- er with Willard Boyles at the Cleveland County Fair. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for six years. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, patricia Sullens Brown; a son and daugh- ter-in-law, Duane and Debbie Brown of Kings Mountain; sons Darin Brown and Chris Brown of Kings Mountain; two stepdaugh- ters, Robin Davis and Deana Hamrick of Kings Mountain; a brother, Jerry Brown of Stokesdale; and seven grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Russell Fitts and Robert Haynes Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. WILLIAM M. GORDON BLACKSBURG, S.C. - William Martin "Bill" Gordon, 78, of 1921 “West Cherokee, died September = 24, 1994 at Upstate Carolina * Medical Center. *. A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late William =C. and Julia Pennington Gordon. “He was President Emeritus of Gordon Mortuary. He was a member of First “Baptist Church, a member of the ~.V.F.W., American Legion and Buffalo Lodge 202 AFM, and a member of the South Carolina “~Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. He is survived by two daughters, ~=Shirley Glisson of Greensboro, “=N.C., and Louise Vassey of Gaffney; four brothers, Charles Gordon of Pacolet, Hershel Gordon and Floyd Gordon of Gaffney, and J.C. Gordon of Alfa, Fla.; and three grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Jim Clark Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. Burial “was in Clingman Memorial Gardens. BEATRICE RAMSEY Mrs. Beatrice Ramsey, 71, of Kings Mountain died September 23, 1994 at the residence of her daughter. > A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of Gus and Maggie Ramsey, and wife of the late Wilburn W. Mullinax. She was a retired textile worker. She is survived by five sons, Kenneth Mullinax of Kings Mountain, Roger Mullinax of Grover, Erngst Mullinax of Salisbury, and’ Eddie Mullinax and Ricky Mullinax of Blacksburg, S.C.; three daughters, Shirley Bennett of Lincolnton, Jennie Peterson of Blacksburg, S.C., and Sandy McKinney of McCormick, S.C.; two brothers, Marvin Ramsey of Charlotte and Jim Ramsey of Hickory Grove, S.C; a sister, Ailene Martin of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Ramsey. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Blacksburg Church of God. Burial was in Mt. View Cemetery. FAYETTA BARBER Fayetta White Barber, 86, of White Oak Manor, died September 22.1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a native of York County, SC and the widow of James Otis Barber. She was a homemaker and the daughter of the late Emmett Franklin and Georgianna Doggett White. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Marion and Ruby Barber of Charlotte; two daughters, Iris Biddy of Kings Mountain and Shirley and her husband, Bill Whitaker, of Kings Mountain; six “grandchildren, Mark Barber of Myrtle Beach, SC, Susan Barber of Charlotte, Tony Whitaker of Waco, Donna Parker of Kings Mountain, Jeff Whitaker of Mayport, Fl. and Scott Biddy of Chesapeake, Va. Six great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church. Rev. David Philbeck and Rev. David Turner officiated. Burial was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. SHIRLEY ALEXANDER Shirley Faye Alexander, 55, of #2 Bennett Drive, Kings Mountain, died September 20, 1994 at her home. A native of Morganton, she was the daughter of the late George Pinkney .and Lillie Brittian Mayhue. She was a homemaker and a member of Kings Mountain Family Worship Center Church of God. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Alexander of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Robin Hope and Terri Collins of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Ray Allmond Friday at 4 p.m. at Kings Mountain Family Worship Center Church of God. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. JOHNNY HUTCHINS JR. Johnny Franklin Hutchins Jr., 48, of 137 Cricket Lane, Kings Mountain, died September 26, 1994 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Johnny Franklin Hutchins Sr. and Evelyn LYLE C. VAUGHAN Lyle C. Vaughan, 66, of 101 South Carpenter Street, Kings Mountain, died September 21, 1994 at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of LaPanto, Ark., he was the son of the late Howard and Hassie Harmon Vaughan. He was employed as a land agent for sever- al oil pipe land companies. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Arch Vaughan; three sons, Roy Vaughan, Randy Vaughan and Ricky Vaughan, all of Houston, TX; three sisters, Lynda Moselle of W. Hollywood, CA, Betty Zorn of Houston, TX, and Joan Glaspy of Innis, TX. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Harold Schwantes and George Auman Saturday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MASON BLACK Mason Black, 90, 104 Ganley Street, Kings Mountain, died September 27, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Eldridge and Martha Jane McDaniel Black, and husband of the late Carrie Jackson Black. He was a retired textile worker and a member of Midview Baptist Church. He is survived by an adopted daughter, Brenda Stroupe of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Dever Black of Spartanburg, S.C. Woodrow Black of Gaffney, S.C., and Marvin Black of Yerington, Nevada; two sisters, Ollie B. Kellian of Rock Hill, S.C., and Eula B. Karian of Gaffney, S.C; and three grandchildren. A graveside service will be con- ducted by the Rev. Bob Hope Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery. DAVID B. ROBERTS YORK, S.C. - David Brooks Roberts, 50, of 1857 Meadow Road, died September 26, 1994. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Pinkney D. and Lois Falls Roberts. He was a self-employed building contractor and a Baptist. Williams Hutchins. He was a mem-""* He is survived by a niece, Gail Shelby, and was a U.S. Army vet- eran of the Viet Nam War. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara "Tommie" Patterson. He is survived by three sisters, Jean Morrison and Brenda Smith of Shelby, and Peggy Darnell of Kings Mountain; and a number of nieces and nephews. Finance officer ‘Maxine Parsons said that the increased work load due to contracts not bid properly and changes in: original contracts dictated the increased costs. Parsons said the project has taken over a year longer than origi- nally planned.
