Hughes dedicated the book to his mother, Clara Humphries Hughes. : Mark Hughes publishes second book on genealogy Kings Mountain author Mark Hughes has published his sec- ond book which people inter- ested in family trees and ge- nealogy will love. Thursday at Mauney Memorial Library Hughes pre- sented his new book to Louise Sanders of the Library staff and coincidentally passed along some information to visitors Peggy Day of Raleigh and Beverly Cato of Greensboro about their ancestors in the Antioch Community. "We had been everywhere trying to find out about our great-great-great grandfather Cornelius Sexton who was buried at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery," said Mrs. Day. She said she found that Vera Hardin of Grover, a for- mer well known historian, had researched much of the history of this area and her genealogi- cal collection was given to the library after her death two years ago. The two women were elated to leaf through Hughes' new book and to learn about his first book, "Bivouac of the Dead.: Hughes is still looking for names of Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War and is currently working on his third and fourth books which - will list the soldiers who were buried at military post cemeter- ies in the West during the Indian War. Hughes' second book took took six months to write and eight years to research. He spend much time in the National Archives in Washington, DC and visiting cemeteries all over the country. The new book lists 8,000 names of soldiers that the War Department failed to publish during and immediately after the Civil War. The book is dedi- cated to Hughes' mother, Clara Humphries Hughes of Kings Mountain. Hughes and his wife, Pattie, and their eight year old daugh- ter, Anna Grace, are moving back to the community from Orangeburg, SC and plan to build a new home in the Dixon Community. Hughes is the son: of Mrs. Clara Hughes of the Dixon Community and the late Jack Hughes. For some years Hughes was associated with colleges in Oklahoma City and Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College in the department of electrical engineering. He has joined the staff of Cleveland Community College. Sanders, Outreach and Children's Library at Mauney Library, said the book will be placed in the Carolina Room. The Carolina Room's collections are devoted to North and South Carolina non-fiction, fiction and genealogy. Sanders served on a trustee committee for her aunt Vera Board reelects Hunt, Horne Officers were reelected by the ; Cleveland County Board of Social Services Monday. Hardin's estate which donated Miss Hardin's genealogical col- lection to Mauney Memorial Library. Visitors from surround- ing states come to use the ge- nealogy reference books and re- source materials also available in the Carolina Room, Sanders said. The Roll of Honor is the only official memorial to the Union dead ever published. The Unpublished Roll of Honor by Hughes is based largely on ma- terials Hughes discovered at the National Archives, including records of national cemeteries omitted from the original Roll of Honor series, records of headstone requests often for soldiers who were buried in pri- vate cemeteries and records of post cemeteries that eluded the original compilers. Names of soldiers are listed with their rank, company and unit and the ‘data is arranged by state and al- phabetically by cemetery and all names are listed in the index. "For institutions and individ- uals who own copies of the original Roll of Honor and the new Index, Hughes says hiS book is a "must buy" compan- ion volume. Hughes' book can be ordered for $35 from Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, Md. 21202-3897.
