i —————— ERE SE May 15,1997 STUDENT AND TUTOR - Madeline Wery tutors 10th grader Cash Nixon at White Oak Manor where Ms. Wery is a resident. Parker Street School students are regulara visitors to the facility. Retired librarian and White Oak resident Madeline Wery and Parker Street 10th grader Cash Nixon share a common in- terest and goals. Both like to read and are teaming up at White Oak Manor in a special community project underway every Friday at the facility on Sipe Street. Wery, a resident of the facility, loves her new volunteer role as Nixon's tutor in English and Nixon says he can see a definite improvement in his grades. Priscilla Rickenbacker, Nixon's teacher on campus, got the idea several months ago to take some of her students on outings to the facility where they have become good friends with some of the residents. "Friday is a special time for the students and residents," ac- cording to Activities Director Shirley Mathis. Pete Bolton, a retired Army veteran, says he looks forward to visits from the students who brighten the morning with their comraderie and report of school activities. Tenth graders Orlando Odums and Todd Owens and ninth grader Michael Neal agree that the community pro- ject endorsed by Principal Mike Rhoney is a highlight of their school week.
