Across the country, people are realizing that a community college provides a solid education. No nonsense job skills. An open door to the job market. Experts tell us that by the year 2000, 85 percent of all new jobs will require more than 13 years of education. That means that without training and education after high school — the kind that a community college provides — you're disqualifying yourself for the vast majority of available jobs. Be smarter than that. Get ready for the future. Start here. GASTON COLLEGE 922-6214 http://www.gaston.cc.nc.us SPRING REGISTRATION: JANUARY 8 rity “Mountain ov s young basketball players are gaining some valuable experi- ence early in the season. The Mountaineers took on one of the top private schools in North Carolina - Charlotte Latin - in their season's opener last Tuesday night, and they face the preseason #1 team from South Carolina, Clover, tonight at the KMHS gym. Sandwiched between those two powers last night was East Gaston, usually one of the strongest teams in the ME-GA 7 4A Conference. The Mountaineers, with just two seniors and three juniors among their current top ten players, fell to Latin 91-67 last week but Sipe was highly pleased with his team's effort. "We were a little bit out- manned, but I thought the 10 kids that we dressed really gave a good effort," he said. "We hit 70 percent from the foul line, so that was a plus, and I thought that Queshon Goode, a fresh- man who led us in rebounding, played extremely well for a ninth grader. We're going to de- pend on him as a front line re- placement, and it's good that he's getting this experience ear- ly in the season." Latin blazed out to a 23-8 first quarter lead and was never threatened. They led 53-22 at the half and 73-39 going into the fourth quarter. Jonte Harrell, who has already re- ceived a full scholarship to the U.S. Naval Academy, led four double-digit scorers with 22 points. Ben Brooks added 19, Jon Overcash 14 and Jonathan Stout 11. Senior guard Marlon Byers, the only returning starter for the Mountaineers until Sipe gets his players that are still on the Mountaineer football team, led the KM offense with 23 points. "We're going to war this week with the same 10 kids," Sipe said, "and [ know that we're go- ing to be a better defensive club because that's something that has been our point of emphasis over the Thanksgiving holi- days." Latin (91) - Stout 11, Brooks 19, Overcash 14, Harrell 22, Colasanth 3, Kennelly 8, Sheehan 2, Cropper 9, Gallagher 3. KM (67) - Byers 23, Moore 5, Bess 8, Denton 4, Nixon 9, Houze 4, Campbell 8, Goode 6.
