Gregory received the Silver Star for his act of gallantry on October 3, 1944 during a battle on Mt. Battaglia, Italy. According to a citation read by State Veteran Affairs Commander Chance Melton, Staff Sergeant Gregory was the senior office of a platoon which had been reduced to 16 men during the battle. As soon as he took command of the platoon, the citation stat- ed that Gregory "reorganized the men and placed them in the most strategic position possible. Shortly thereafter, Company A suffered a counterattack unsur- passed in determination and in- tensity. "The enemy succeeded in set- ting up a machine gun, which was raking the platoon with devastating fire. Staff Sergeant Gregory, no noting this, imme- diately set out in a life or death struggle to silence the gun. His platoon, being engaged in a heavy firefight, was able to give him little or no supporting fire. He crawled toward the gun, re- turning their fire with that of his rifle until he was close to the enemy.
