Briefs James Hall receives scholarship to NCSA James M. Hall of Kings Mountain has received a Roanoke Island Summer Institute Scholarship for the 1998-99 .year at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. The award was announced during a special ceremony on the School of the Arts campus. Hall is a rising college sopho- more in the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Hall Sr. of Country Creek Drive. The Roanoke Island Summer Institute Scholarship is for North Carolina residents. Preference is given to students who have been involved in the NCSA Summer Institute on Roanoke Island. The North Carolina School of the Arts is the only state-assist- ed, residential arts school of its kind in the world. The school prepares talented students for professional careers in dance, design and production, drama, filmmaking, music, and visual arts. : The school's-distinguished faculty is thade dp of profes- sional artists, including a Tony Award-winning Broadway de- signer, an OBIE Award-winning director, a former ballerina with the New York City Ballet and a veteran of the Royal Ballet Orchestra. In addition, renowned guest artists fre- quently visit the campus, in- cluding The Juilliard String Quartet, Murray Louis, John Lee Beatty and Robert Wise. Of this total, two-thirds are in col- lege, one-third in high school. Half of the student body is from North Carolina, and the other half is from 44 states and 23 for- ‘eign countries. Selected by au- dition and/or interview, stu- dents have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, col- lege Arts Diploma, and bache- lor's and master's degrees. Art camp reception and exhibit planned Children that participated in the "Art is Great -'In 198," Summer Art and Music Camps will have an opportunity to take their parents, grandpar- ents, friends, neighbors and other interested persons to the Arts Center to see examples of the works they have completed at camps this summer. There have been five weeks of art camp during the months of June and July, and two weeks of Adventure Music Camp. The Art Camp students have worked in a variety of mediums including pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics, handmade (ripaper, tempra, waxes and dyes and clay. The Music Camp stu- dents have studied the holidays and customs of five countries, spanning four continents through arts and crafts and eth- nic foods. There will be an opening re- ception to honor students and teachers on July 30 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Arts Council, 111 South Washington Street, Shelby.
