Page 2B Herald/Time July 15, 1999 urry and Hopper in East-West Game For the first time in its 76-year football his- tory, Kings Mountain High School will have two players in the East- West All-Star Game next Wednesday night at Greensboro Grimsley’s Bob Jamieson Stadium. Julius Curry, a 265- pound offensive line- man, and Frank Hopper, a 299-pound defensive linemen, will play on the West team for Head Coach Jimmy Teague of Reidsville. Curry was chosen as a regular when the teams were announced last spring, and Hopper, who was named as an alternate, was notified Monday night that he has been chosen to replace a player that will not be able to compete. Curry and Hopper were key players on last year’s KMHS team Wildcats win two in New York tourney The Kings Mountain Wildcats won two of their first three games in the Hall of Fame Tournament earlier this week in Cooperstown, NY. The Wildcats defeated Long Island, NY and Westerville, MD before falling to Philadelphia, PA. Tyler Leach, Philip Bunch, Cody Barrett, and John Swink all hit home runs. ; The Wildcats will play at least eight games in New York. They will also be inducted into the Youth Baseball Hall of Fame. R& W Rockets win. Dixie Belles league The R&W Rockets won the 13-15 year-old Dixie Belles League championship with on- ly one loss. Team members were Richelle Stroupe, Erin Dover, Sally Denton, Brenn Kates, Allison Hoppes, Lauren Dye, Brooke Blackburn, Liz Griffin, Katie Bennett and Ashley McDaniel. Coaches were Brian Feldman, Tim McDaniel, Rick Stroupe and Mike Bennett. He also played some de- fense last year, recording 44 tackles and three quarterback sacks. Hopper was a three-year starter and was also a two-time All-Southwestern Conference choice. He was one of the team’s top defensive players over the last two years. Last year he made 118 unassisted tackles and led the team in tackles for loss (23) and quarterback sacks (15). The two will leave today to go to Greensboro for a week of practice. Next Wednesday's game begins at 7 p.m. and is the official culmination of the annual North Carolina Coaches Clinic, which members of the KMHS staff will attend on Monday through Wednesday. : Other Mountaineers selected to play in past East-West Games include George Harris in 1956, John McGinnis in 1957, Fred Dixon in 1964, Hubert McGinnis in 1965, Mark George in 1973, Kevin Mack in 1980, Edwin Sherer in 1986, and Brent Bagwell in 1988. Boys & Girls Club registering players Registration is underway for the Cleveland County Pop Warner Warrior football team. + Sign-ups will continue through Friday, July 30 at the Boys & |. Girls Club of Cleveland County, 412 West Sumter Street, Shelby. Any youth who qualifies on the weight restrictions, ages 10- 13, can register. The age cutoff date is August 1. Weight range for ages 10-12 is 80-129 pounds, and age 13 range is 80-109 pounds. Club hours are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. A $35 registration fee is charged. The fee will include membership in t he Boys & Girls Club After-School Program. A birth certificate with a raised seal is required. All birth certificates will be held on file and will be returned at the close of the season. All play- ers also must have a physical. KM Optimist Club sets football sign-ups Kings Mountain Optimist Club will register football play- ers and cheerleaders on Saturday, July 24 and Saturday, July 31 from 11 a.m-2 p.m. at City Stadium. All boys and girls ages 7-12 who live in Kings Mountain, Bessemer City and Grover are eligible. Those registering must take their latest report card and a birth certificate.
