Redmond’s performance of her work took part in the school media center. “The language of my poetry is cellular,” said Redmond. “It is part of my body and life. I feel like I would die if I couldn't write.” Just a few of the many acco- lades Redmond has received for her work are The Carrie McCray Literary Award, a study fellowship from Vermont Writing Center, study scholar- ships to the Atlantic Center for The Kings Mountain Herald published author with several titles to her credit. These in- clude “Naming It, If I Ain't African,” “Word Power,” and “Backbone”. She also has a video “Mama’s Magic” and au- dio tape “Coming Forth” avail- able. That assemblage has just published their first poetry anthology called “Steam Dreams”. A variety of students came Monday to see Redmond ex- press herself through the lan- guage of poetry. “I came last year to hear her performance,” said 10th grader Miles Hovis. “Hearing Redmond’s work seems to ex- pand my literary horizons.” . BRIEFS Band concert slated at KMHS December 7 The annual Winter Band Concert by the Kings Mountain District School band will be pre- sented Thursday evening, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Auditorium at Kings Mountain High School. The concert will feature the Kings Mountain Middle School eighth grade band, and the Kings Mountain High School ninth grade and Blazer Bands. A variety of selections will be performed ranging from sea- sonal to Dixieland. The concert is free and open to the public and will be con- ducted by Christopher Cole and Gil Doggett. Dori Sanders coming to Barnes Auditorium Acclaimed author Dori Sanders will give a special pre- sentation at Kings Mountain High School’s Barnes Auditorium on Wednesday, December 6 at 7 p.m. Sanders’ visit is cosponsored by the KMHS Cultural Arts Program and English Department. A na- tive and resident of Upstate South Carolina, Sanders’ topic will be “Sharing Your Gifts”. Sanders’ presentation will be one the entire family will enjoy. Brutko selected Youth of the Month Kerri Brutko, a senior at Kings Mountain High School, was recently honored as the Shelby Youth Exchange of the Month. The Exchange Club of Shelby hon- ors two stu- dents from ev- ery high school in Cleveland County. J Kerri “ received a plaque com- memorating BRUTKO her accomplishments as an out- standing student at KMHS. She also received a $25 check and the opportunity to be consid- - ered for a local scholarship to be given by the Exchange Club in the spring. The student from Cleveland County that receives the local scholarship then has the opportunity to be consid- ered for the regional level schol- arship.
