RR RRR RR Re SRE a ———————— November 30, 2000 Kings Mountain High's fall athletes were honored at the Booster Club’s annual fall sports awards ceremony Tuesday night at B.N. Barnes Auditorium. Players from all sports were recognized, and players who made All-Conference received trophies. All-Conference recipients were Matt Ash, Jarvarous Wilson and Jacobi Oates in foot- ball; Katie Bennett, Stephanie Edwards, Lesley Potter, Meghan Potter, Raquel Welsh, Alan Gibson and Brad Goforth in cross country; Stacey Costner in tennis; Ryan Lovelace, Pablo Peralta, and Warren Shirey in soccer; and Carrie Brinkley, Beth Bumgardner, Shonda Cole and Kristin Hardin in volley- ball. Choral show Dec. 4 at Barnes Auditorium The Kings Mountain High School Symphonic Chorale will present their annual Christmas concert on Monday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m. in B.N. Barnes Auditorium. The concert was moved to Monday so as not to conflict with other events on campus. Other groups to perform will include the Chamber Choir, Women’s Select, Men's Select, and Kings Revue. Symphonic will be singing the music they performed for the North Carolina Music Educators Conference, includ- ing “Achieved is the Glorious Works” by Joseph Haydn. Admission is $3 per person. Revolutionary graves to be dedicated The Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate grave markers in honor of Samuel Collins and John Harmon on Saturday, December 2 at 2 p.m. Sst 2 1000%e Ig in El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Both Collins and Harmon were veterans of the American Revolution. The ceremony will be inside the church if the weather is inclement. Any fami- ly member as well as the public are invited to attend. EdenGardens holds Thanksgiving feast EdenGardens of Kings _ Mountain assisted living facility held a special Family Thanksgiving Dinner on | Tuesday, November 21. Bennett Nominated for PLA scholarshi Christopher Bennett, a Kings Mountain High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal's Leadership Award scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Herff Jones, Inc. funds the PLA program. John Yarbro, KMHS principal, announced the nomination, which places Bennett in the na- tional competition. One hun- dred fifty national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to re- ceive $1,000 college scholar- ships. “Chris is an exceptional stu- dent, the best that Kings Mountain has to offer,” Yarbro said. Principals in high schools throughout the country nomi- Sam Bones and Skins tournament November 24. Golfers earned bones and skins for their overall score from certain tees, and closest to the pin on par three holes. In Division A, Dave Robinson was the winner with six skins and one bone, followed by Ronnie Murphy and Justin Etters with five skins each, and Scott Summitt with two. Stoney Jackson, Mitch Howze, and Scott Summitt tied for low score with 76. In Division B, Ernie Teague was the winner with seven skins, followed by Pat Phifer with five, Ken Walker three, and Tim Leach with three skins and one bone. In Division C, Bud McCombs and John Caveny each had six skins and one bone. In Division D, Jim Champion and Jack Acheson led with nine skins and one bone each. Tree of Love to be lighted on Dec. 6 The Kings Mountain Hospital Auxiliary is decorating the Tree of Love in the lobby of the hos- pital. The lighting ceremony “will take place Wednesday, December 6 at 5 p.m. Mrs. J.C. Bridges will present a program of organ music be- ginning at 4:45 p.m. the day of the lighting. The welcome will be given by Hank Neal, admin- istrator of the hospital, and the devotion by Dr. Richard Newsome, minister of First Presbyterian Church. Andy Neisler and his daughter Virginia will also offer a musi- cal interlude. Persons may still contribute $10 and have a crystal angel placed on the tree in memory of or honor of a loved one. Names of contributors and persons be- ing memorialized or honored nate one of their student lead- ers. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organi- zations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, em- ployment experience, and aca- demic record. They also were required to write an essay. “Chris Bennett has demon- strated exemplary achievement in his academic work and ser- vice to his school and commu- nity,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, NASSP executive director. “He's a fine example of the out- standing caliber of young peo- ple in America’s high schools.” At KMHS, Bennett serves as Student Body President, is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club, and is an active participant in the Future Teachers of America Club. Health Department immunization drive The Cleveland County Health Department is sponsoring a two week Christmas Immunization Clinic. The time and hours are: December 1 through December 14, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Children who receive immu- nizations during this time will receive a special gift at the Health Department Christmas Party, December 14 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. All other children will re- ceive a well-filled goodie bag. Banks finishes Marine Corps boot camp Marine Corps Pfc. Cryst C. Banks, son of Wanda E. and Dallas E. Banks of 3028 Poplar Circle, Shelby, recently complet- ed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Banks successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge the new Marine recruits both[physically and mentally. E&E Professional Plaza ribbon cutting The new E&E Professional Plaza, 502 W. King Street, Kings was a Morehead 1p and Junior Marshall. Next year he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earn a bac- calaureate degree in education. NASSP is the nation’s largest school leadership organization with a membership reaching 40,000 middle level and high school principals and assistant principals. It administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, the National Association of Student Councils, and the National Association of Student Activity Advisers, collectively serving an additional 50,000 advisers and more than one million students. NASSP is also the sponsor of National Student Leadership Week. Mountain, recently held a ribbon cutting and grand opening. The event was attended by many local . business and civic leaders. The project was started in 1999 by Dr. Augustine Eze and Dr. Obinna Eruchalu of Metrolina Surgery, PA. Brackett Company of Charlotte is the developer. The building has three floors totaling 28,200 square feet of Class A med- ical and professional office space. Current tenants of the Plaza in- clude Metrolina Surgery PA, Mid- Carolina Cardiology, Piedmont Urology, Neurosurgery and Spine Center, Foothills Podiatry, Christian Anderson, MD, PA, and Carolina Digestive Disease Center. PARADE From 1A will feature Santa landing by helicopter in Patriots Park. Music and other entertainment will also be part of the holiday action. Grover’s Christmas parade will also take place Saturday. The units will form up near the Spring Acres shdivieh about 12:15 p.m. and step off towards town at 1 p.m. After turning right at the Grover Fire Department, the procession will then turn right again and head towards the Post Office. From the post of- fice, marchers will turn left and proceed to First Baptist Church where the parade will end. Grover parade organizer Evelyn Willis says she expects over 80 entries this year. Grand Marshall for this year’s parade will be former Shelby mayor Les Roark. “We will have bands, antique cars, horses, the Oasis Hillbillies, and much more,” Willis said.
