SRS 5 f ; “Page 8A The Kings Mountain Herald Cole’s 28-point effort leads KM ladies over Shelby 43-41 Kings Mountain High's varsi- ty basketball teams split a non- conference twinbill at Shelby <Tuesday night. Behind a 28-point effort from junior sensation Shonda Cole, the Lady Mountaineers broke a two-game losing streak with a 43-41 victory. The boys grabbed an early lead, but created too many turnovers against Shelby’s . pressing defense and Ken Napier’s Lions stormed back for a 61-47 victory. The KM teams continue a four-game road streak Friday night at Clover, SC. They travel -to North Gaston next Tuesday and return home Wednesday to face a very talented East Gaston team. The East Gaston boys are led by one of the best prep play- ers in the state, 6-9. Tyler Berg who has already committed to « Wofford College. : Kings Mountain's girls (3-2) won for the first time since edg- ing Shelby in the second game of the season on Npgember 26. -Cole’s strong inside play was girls (0-4) to . but Shelby too much for the Shelby overcome. Kings Mountain grabbed a 22- 9 lead after the first half hung tough down the stretch, cut- ting the margin to just two points with 22 seconds remain- ing. The Lady Mountaineers clinched the win at the foul line. Cole was the only double- digit scorer for the KM ladies. Lauren Montgomery scored 13 points, Shakita Jefferies 11, and Jada Bratton 10 for Shelby. - COLE Kings Mountain's boys grabbed a 12-8 first quarter lead, but Shelby (2-2) turned up the defensivé pressure in the second quarter and turned the game around. Shelby’s pressing defense forced numerous KM turnovers and the Lions came back to grab a 19-18 halftime lead. Shelby outscored KM 20-11 in the third quarter to go up 39-29, and the ~ Lions led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter. Will Young scored 13 points and James Ryan 11 for the Lions, who broke a two-game KM winning streak. Josh Gash was the only KM player to reach double figures with 13 points.
