Page 2B Javees defeated by RS 19-8 Kings Mountain High's JV football team fell to R-S Central 19-8 Thursday night at John Gamble Stadium. Kings Mountain’s only touchdown came on a three- yard run by J.J. McClain. McClain also ran the two- point conversion. The Mountaineers take a 3-5 record to St. Stephens tonight at 7 o'clock. INDIANS From 1B “Theyre going to be tough,” says Farquharson. “They've got some good size and good speed. They’re going to give us multiple formations again and they're going to give us more smash mouth foot- ball.” With the loss of Gordon, the Indians have gone to a more balanced running game. Adrian Young, who was the #2 rusher behind Gordon last year, has stepped up as the team's leading rusher, and as a defensive back he is also one of the Indians’ best defensive players. His younger brother, freshman, Justin Young, has also developed into a good runner. Kings Mountain has been hampered by injuries and sickness of late, and Farquharson said the Mounties will have to be at the top of their game to win. “We're going to have to show up and play for sure,” he said. “That same defense that kept us in the game against Crest has to be the one that shows up against St. Stephens.” The Kings Mountain Herald in second half to beat By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Derek Smith hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chris Jolly on the sixth play of the second half to _ break open a close game and send Kings Mountain's Mountaineers to a 24-7 vic- tory over R-S Central in a Southwestern 3A Conference football game Friday night in Rutherfordton. The victory gives the Mountaineers a 2-2 confer- ence and 2-6 overall mark heading into their final home game Friday night at 7:30 against St. Stephens. The winner of that game will likely get the confer- ence’s #4 seed for the upcoming State 3A playoffs, and the loser #5. The only team with a mathematical chance to knock either of those teams out of the play- offs is Fred T. Foard, and to do it the Tigers would have to win their final three games against Crest, R-S Central and Hickory. The Mountaineers, coming off a hard-fought 21-0 loss to top-ranked Crest the previ- ous Friday, came out flat against the Hilltoppers, who hadn’t won a game since upsetting the Mountaineers exactly two years earlier in a game at R-S. Pablo Peralta’s 34-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in the first half broke a 7-7 tie, and with Kings Mountain's defense playing better as the game wore on Smith's early third quarter touchdown recep- tion basically put the game out of reach. ; “It was a win,” comment- ed KM Coach Dave Farquharson. “It wasn't the prettiest of all ball games, October 24, 2002 ‘Mounties break open game RS GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain defensive lineman Cedric Young (80) tries to hang on to R-S Central quarterback Chris DeCamp until some help comes along in Friday's game at R-S Central. but it was a win. “I think we came out a lit- tle flat. We had just expend- ed a lot of energy and a lot of emotion a week before against Crest, and just weren't mentally ready to get in there and get after it. But as the game went along we did a better job of it.” Kings Mountain suffered a serious blow to its offense on the opening kickoff, when senior co-captain Cortney Smith pulled a hamstring. He sat out the rest of the game and will likely miss this week's game with St. Stephens. Fullback Aquino Simmons, who had been battling bronchitis, wore down as the game went on and spent most of the sec- ond half on the sidelines. He gained 59 yards in 12 carries, including a 19-yard burst from the one-yard line on a third and 17 which helped spark KM'’s first touchdown drive. Jeremiah Adams replaced him in the second half and gained 26 yards in six carries, including a one- yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Several other players who had been in the shadows most of the year also stepped up and played a big game. Six-four wide receiver Ta Tae Roebuck caught two passes for 23 yards in the Mounties’ opening touch- down drive which ended with a there-yard run by Jamarl Barrino. “We had some people that had been sick during the week, so we planned on that during the week,” Farquharson said. “We're always asking them to be ready when their time comes to be counted on.” R-S Central, which had only 19.players dressed out to 44 for the Mounties, gave a gutsy performance. The Hilltoppers drove 74 yards to tie the game at 7-all in the second quarter on a one- yard run by Kortney Foster, and had two other drives deep in KM territory bog down with penalties. “They’ve showed that kind of spunk all year,” said Farquharson. “They showed that in all of the film we watched. They don’t have a whole lot of numbers but they come to play. They got after it and I thought they did a good job.” 500 Below Kelley Blue Book!!! . 4 2000 Ford Taurus SE P997 2 to Choose, One Owner Trades Kelley Blue Book $12,140 Sale *10,1 40 99 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 Chrome Wheels, 4x4, A/C, 5 Speed Kelley Blue Book $13,040 Sale 10,040 ii Simi 2002 Pontiac Sunfire 4 cyl., Auto, Loaded 2.9% for 60 mos!
