—— i i April 17, 2003 BRIEFS ihe ngs Mountain Herald Lucky ducks win bowling league Greg Evans won the scor- ing battle but his opponent, Lucky Ducks, won the war in mixed duckpin bowling league action Tuesday night at Dilling Heating. Evans bowled a 163 game and 407 series to lead all bowlers, but his M.R. Ducks lost to Lucky Ducks 6-2, giv- ing the Lucky Ducks the fourth quarter champi- onship. Mark Abernathy led the Lucky Ducks with a 138 line and 374 set, and Ed Philbeck added a 125 line and 348 series. The Lucky Ducks finished with a 38-26 record while M.R. Ducks dropped to third place with a 32-32 mark. The Pushovers defeated Deadwood 6-2 to take sec- ond place with a 34-30 mark. Deadwood finished 24-40. Mark Midgette led the Pushovers with a 145 line and 391 set, and Zeke Rybczyk added a 162 line and 353 set. Russ Armstrong had a 128 line and 316 set and Joey Whitaker had a 116 line and 317 set for Deadwood. Old Timers lead Thursday duckpins The Old Timers swept the Pinseekers Thursday night at Dilling Heating to extend their mixed duckpin bowl- ing league lead to eight games. The Old Timers (32-8) got a 118 line and 349 set from Allen Myers and a 113 line and 318 set from John Dilling. Colleen Philbeck had a 116 line and 299 set. Scott Simpson on winning team Scott Simpson was a mem- ber of the Gaston Day School Drama Troupe that finished second in the recent Gaston County Drama Festival at Gaston College. Two members of the troupe, Jeff Rasmussen and Jessie Case, were chose for the All-County Cast. Jennifer Page completes training Army Pvt. Jennifer L. Page has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. Page is the daughter of Eva Page of Rollingbrook Road, and Jeff Page of- -- Bethlehem Road. She is a *2002 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. During nine weeks of training, Page studied the Army mission, history, tradi- tion and core values, physi- cal fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, mili- tary courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Jones assigned to tank division Marine Corps Reserve : 10119 oid Staff Sgt. Steven K. Jones, son of Wanda F. and Jonas E. Leftwich of Kings Mountain, is on active duty assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve's Company A 8th Tank Battalion, based in Fort Knox, KY. Marines from Jones’ unit recently deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 8th Tank Battalion pro- vides armored combat power during amphibious assaults and in subsequent operations ashore, using maneuvering, armor-pro- tected firepower and shock effect to close with and destroy the enemy. Jones is a 1987 graduate of Bessemer City High School and joined the Marine Corps Reserve in July 1987. Principal Jerry Hoyle said that the two do an outstanding job. ABIGAIL WOLFORD / HERALD Choir members pose with the trophies they earned in the MusicFest Orlando 2003 compe- tition last weekend. The women’s chorus and men’s chorus each placed second in their categories. The concert choir placed first in the Class AAA division, and the show choir placed third in its division.
