BRYMER Staff Writer The Southern Arts Society opened the doors publicly to its new facility for the first time Sunday afternoon. Over 200 people visited the Depot Arts Center, pur- _ chasing the calendars the organization is well known for. AOS “We stayed busy,” said Johnsie Reavis of the Southern Arts Society. Along with the calendar sale, work by several area artists was displayed in the gallery. Most of the paint- ings, prints and pottery is for sale. SAS volunteers hand printed the silk screen calen- dars. The 13 designs, all by area artists, feature moun- tains. The artists have used a torn paper method to cre- ate the i images. This year’s calendar hon- ors the memory of A.B. Snow who was a vital part of Kings Mountain's arts community for many years. She died earlier this year. “I just wish A.B. could have seen this dream come true,” Reavis said of the Depot Arts Center. While the center’s gallery is complete except for refin- ishing the floors, other parts of the building still need work. Volunteers are now paint- ing the room which will become a library. Mrs. Snow's family has donated her collection of art books to 1 90ULS iG home the effort. “We're just blessed by the community coming togeth- er,” Reavis said. The office and combina- tion board room and kitchen also is being renovated. A large portion of the building will be used as an arts class- room. It will require limited renovation. The depot was built by “Souther Railroad in 1925. It will be furnished in the Craftsman style which was popular in that era. The railroad owns the land the depot sits on though the City of Kings Mountain owns the building itself. The city renovated the building in 1977 for use as a senior center. After the senior center built its new building on .Business 74, the city leased the depot to the arts society. The group hopes to have all renovations completed by spring. “It’s coming together,” Reavis said. She said the organization received positive feedback Sunday on what has already been done. The gallery will be open Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. - through Christmas. A limited number of cal- endars are available. Those costs $20 each.
