will hold its 17th annual cel-

the birthday of the late Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.

The Wonders of Winter, a
family program for children
ages 3 and older, will be

The program focuses on a
celebration of the season
with cold-weather stories,
fun activities, and a take-
home winter craft creation.

Stargazing set
at Broad River
A winter stargazing pro-
gram is slated for Saturday,
January 17 from 7-9 p.m. at
Broad River Greenway.
Participants will join local
astronomers to locate con-

GPS program set
at Crowders Mtn.
A GPS units /high tech
compass class will be held
Saturclay, January 24 at 10
a.m. at Crowders Mountain
State Park.
Participants will learn
some tricks that will make it
easier to use. The class will
be outdoors. Participants
should take their GPS and
owner’s manual.
Participants need to have
prior knowledge of how to
use a magnetic compass.
Meet at the visitor's center.
Compasses will be provid-
ed.

Philana Harrington, to Kenneth Clayton
Houston of Tuscaloosa, AL, son of Dr. and

and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Houston of Maiden.
The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of
Ret. Col. Ralph T. and Charlotte Garver of
Palatka, FL. She graduated from Orange
High in Winter Garden, FL, and attended
Valencia College in Orlando, FL and Auburn
University in Alabama. She is employed at
Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, AL.
The bridegroom-to-be is the grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Houston of Hickory
and the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ratchford
Sr. He graduated from Kings Mountain
High School and will graduate from the
University of Alabama in May 2004.
The couple became engaged at Red
Square in Moscow and plans to be married
on May 29, 2004 at the First Baptist Church,
Maria Williams Chapel in Orlando, FL.
