A PEAS I December 16, 2004 BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer The SAT, a test which helps determine college admission, will now include an essay and other changes. Dr. Jane King and John Goforth updated Cleveland County School board members on the changes dur- ing Monday night's meeting. The 25-minute essay, multiple choice grammar questions and Algebra II problems will appear on the test in March 2005. The new testing material will affect juniors. Scoring for current seniors who take the test this spring will not include the new materi- al. The new SAT also eliminates analogies and quantitative comparisons. Shorter read- SAT changes explained at School Board meeting re-elected Dr. George Litton as its chairper- son Monday night. “The strength of this board is not found in any one person but all members,” Litton said after the vote. Board member Tommy Greene nominated Litton, saying “he’s-done an outstanding job.” The nomination received several sec- onds. ing passages will be added though the longer passages will remain. In other business, the board unanimously KMHS students earn Advanced Placement Seven Kings Mountain High School seniors and eight 2004 graduates have earned the Advanced Placement Scholar designa- tion. The honor is bestowed on stu- dents who receive an average grade of three or higher on three or more AP exams. The stu- dents include current seniors: MARTIN BUNCH Kristen Martin; AP classes in biology, calculus, environ- mental science and English. Martin plans to attend Davidson College to prepare for a career in poli- tics. Her parents are Greg and Bridget Martin. Ethan Blanton; AP classes in biology, Earth science, environmental science. Blanton plans to study teaching at UNC-Charlotte. His parents are Randy and REID BRIEFS Verleen Blanton. Jason Carpenter. He plans to study dental hygiene at the University of Oregon. His parents are Greg and Ann Carpenter. Carpenter was also the first KMHS stu- dent in over 16 years to win the DAR essay contest. His parents are Greg and Ann Carpenter. Philip Bunch; AP classes in calculus and biology. Bunch plans to major in music and Bible / religion at Erskine College. His parents are Philip and Dianne Bunch. Clay Costner; AP classes in English and:calculus. Costner plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill to prepare for a career in business. His parents are Edwin and Grace Costner. Jena Gladden; AP classes in calculus and English. Gladden plans to major in biology at Erskine College. Her parents are Lyn and Jeanette Cheshire. Robert Thomas Reid; AP classes in biology, calculus, English. Reid plans to study medicine at either UNC- Chapel Hill, Duke or Furman. His parents are Ray Thomas Reid and Patricia Ann Reid.
