i # { Page 4A Scenic is by-way it's not We assume that the state DOT has a criteria when they designate a road as a “Scenic Byway.” Perhaps they need to take a ride down Lake Montonia Road and rethink the label. Acres and acres of trees have been clear-cut right up to the road leaving an image of a tangled war zone. Clear-cutting with refor- estation by planting seedlings is the expressed rationale for such devasta- tion, but vision and creative planning is essential in respecting the impact such decisions will have on oth- ers, the habitat of animals, the tepidity of streams, etc. Some questions that might arise from clear-cut- ting are: 1 - Does not the inherent right of private property also imply some responsi- bility that the impact of its use or disuse will have on others? 2 - As growth and encroachments approach our state and sleepy com- munities that have a view of lush greenery of trees, is it not possible to have lead- ers and citizens with a vision and plan to preserve the view along with growth? We are proud of the beau- ty of our state and want to have it remain so for future generations. A scenic by- way, it is not!
