Page 2B ¥ SPORTS The Kings Mountain Herald June 1, 2006 1 McClain, Marable KMHS Athletes of Y LaRonda McClain and Nate Marable were named Female and Male Athletes of the Year at the annual spring sports banquet Wednesday night at Kings Mountain High School. Both have been multi-sport athletes for the Mountaineers during their varsity careers. McClain played volleyball, basketball and softball for the Lady Mountaineers, helping lead them to confer- ence championships in vol- leyball, state championships in softball, and the confer- ence tournament champi- onship in basketball. McClain was Southwestern 3A Conference Player of the Year in volley- ball and All-Conference three years running in softball. She has signed a scholar- ship to play softball at Wingate University. Last week she helped lead the Mountaineer softball team to its second straight state 3A title. She has been one of the leading hitters on the team for the past three seasons, and ranked #1 each year in stolen bases. Marable was a football and track standout for the Mountaineers. In football last fall, he led the SWC in pass receiving and made the All- Conference team. In track this spring, he was LaRonda McClain, left, and Nate Marable were named Athletes of the Year at the annual KMHS spring sports ban- quet Wednesday. All-Conference, team co- MVP, and qualified for the Western Regional and State Championship meets. Other awards presented Wednesday: Tennis - Will Franks and Zack Putnam, MVP for dou- bles, and All-Conference. Baseball - Brantley Blalock, Cody Barrett, Trey Glass, Ryan Leach and Isaac Proctor, All-Conference. Women’s soccer - Caitlyn Suber, Lauren Suber, Katie Cooke, Susie Potter, Tayler Deaton and Ashley Witherspoon, All- Conference; Susie Potter, SWC Player of the Year; Bennett Suber, Jennifer Lingg, and Vanessa Sidavong, All-Region; Brittany McClain, Most Improved. Track - Stacy Crawford, Michael Ross, Jaye Jackson, Nate Marable, Darrick Marable, Samantha Doe, Tyler Hellstrand, All- Conference; Kelly Flynn, Coach’s Award; Kim Shank, Women’s MVP; Michael Ross, State Qualifier; Nate Marable nd Darrick Marable, Co-MVP; Tyler Hellstrand, Regionals.
