The Kings Mountain Herald April 3, 2008 GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.coM The 21st annual Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremo- ny will be hie olad Saturday, May 10 at 6 p-m. at Central United Methodist Church. Three indi- viduals and one team will be inducted and numer- ous other indi- viduals = will receive special achievement awards and scholarships. The cost is $10. Tickets are available at the Kings Mountain Herald and from members of the Hall of Fame Committee. Inductees include: asaVar Curry, one of the all- time great basketball players at Kings Mountain High School and Belmont Abbey College. Curry scored 1,022 points dur- ing his three-year KMHS career, was a three-time All-Conference CURRY selection and the SWC Player of the Year in 1985. Yon, a 2005 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, was a stand- out football player and wrestler at KMHS. After high school, he worked for a year and a half at Martin Marietta and weekends at RO’s Barbecue to earn enough money to enroll in college. He is one of 17 linemen at ASU, and one of only three walk-ons to make the team. Josh’s brother, Chris, also .played football at KMHS. While in KM, Josh lives with Angie and Richard Cogdill and their son, Casey, another former KMHS football player who is a _ lineman at Wingate University. “Josh is like one of our own kids,” said Richard Cogdill. “He's been with us about five years. Ten of his fighters won Professional World Title Championship belts, and 16 won the U.S. title. Eng trained the first Undisputed Kickboxing Champion of the World, David “Rock” Humphries. The 1989-90 KMHS wrestling team, which won the Western Regional Championship and finished second in the State tournament. Coached by Steve Moffitt, the Mountaineers com- piled an 18-2 overall record with their only losses to the state 3-A and 4-A champi- onship teams.
