The SAT is a national test usu- ally reserved for college-bound seniors. But since Alexis scored so well on last year’s End-of- Grade Math exam (earning about 95 percent) the state offered her the chance to take the SAT with other top test tak- ers, juniors and seniors. She scored a total of 1016 points, including: 400 points in Math, 310 in Writing and 270 in Critical Reading. “I'm very proud of her,” said her mother Angela Bedgood. According to the student score report, Alexis scored high- er than 15 percent of last year’s college-bound seniors across the nation and 14 percent of col- lege-bound seniors statewide in Math. She scored higher than three percent of last year’s college- bound seniors across the state and nation on the Writing por- tion of the SAT. Alexis was ranked higher than two percent of last year’s college-bound seniors nationwide and one ALEXIS BEDGOOD percent of statewide seniors on Critical Reading. She admitted that it was a hard test. “I feel good,” Alexis said, about the scores. “It does- n't really affect me right now.” But practice never hurts. Ms. Bedgood said that Alexis will be able to take the SAT again as a Junior and as a Senior in high school. According to the score report, her chances of improv- ing in each of the test subjects range from 64-80 percent. With her first exposure to the SAT at the young age of 12 and the possibility of even higher scores in the future, Alexis is sure to turn the heads of college recruiters one day. But her mother said that she ‘marks on SAT is not ready for her daughter 80 to college just yet. “She’s got five more years of school left,” she said. “I want her to be able to be a child, to experience high school, the football games, the dances and the proms.” Alexis didn’t take a Pre-SAT course or spend hours upon hours of cramming for the exam. Her mother said that she just used the book that CollegeBoard SAT sent her as a study guide. Ms. Bedgood said that all of the good teachers her daughter has had over the years helped prepare her for the SAT, as well. Alexis has a history of high grades. In fourth grade, she progressed 17 percent over any other student on the End-of- Grade exams in Math, Ms. Bedgood said. She makes A’s and B’s in school. But even though she is very bright, she still loves hanging out with her friends and just being a kid. Alexis helps take care of sev- eral horses that live near their home in Kings Mountain. The family also has four dogs, one bird and a snake. She said that she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She plans to attend NC State pier high school.
