NASCAR driver, Winston Cup Quest Motor Racing team owner and TV analyst with Fox Sports Net, Derrike Cope, presented a program of some of his memories on and off of the track. Rotarian Jim Testa had invited him to speak and Cope gave due credit to Testa and Rotarian Carol Warner for helping him in his fast-paced pursuit to NASCAR fame. Derrike’s father was an engine builder for some of the best driv- ers in Winston West competition. In 2000, Cope formed his own team, Quest Motor Racing, with NHRA driver Warren Johnson. Testa and Warner provided finan- cial backing and encouragement. “Warner and Testa did a lot for me,” Cope said. He told the Rotarians that they, like many teams, started wi about five-seven employees and now have over 400. The sport of stock car racing, which began with moonshine- hauling bootleggers ying to out- run the law during the prohibi- tion era, has come a long way. There's no more “mountain dew” tucked in the floorboards, but Mountain Dew and alcoholic beverage companies do sponsor the racers. And the races, them- selves, have been renamed, such as the Sprint Cup, which was once the Winston Cup and then, the Nextel Cup.
