Page 2A The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, November 17, 2010 At 130 years old Mt. Zion is just getting started By ELIZABETH STEWART . staff writer “You are 130 years old and you're just getting started,” said city council- man Rev. Howard Shipp to a packed congregation at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Sunday. Shipp said Mount Zion is his home church. It was at Mount Zion that he was bap- tized and in later years was called to the ministry. It was where he preached his first funeral, married his first cou- ple, and called the church his “first family.” Promising that one day he’s returning, not as a minister but as a wor- shiper taking his seat in the congregation, he said that “this church hasn’t lasted 130 years by accident, it was God’s will and God has been with us all the way.” Other speakers joined Shipp in calling the church a “beacon” in the community. Kings Mountain Mayor Rick Murphrey and three councilmen and their wives - Dean Spears, Houston Corn and Shipp - county commis- sioner Mary Accor and San- dra (Mrs. Rick) Murphrey were special guests. The mayor and Accor took the occasion to present special proclamations from the city and county that rec- ognized the church on “Mount Zion Day” as a cor- nerstone, a pillar in the com- munity. A former pastor, Rev.. Dewey Whittenburg, also made remarks, praising grace of '| God and BH is Rev. Howard Shipp 16291 ship over 130 years. Adding to the celebration was guest minister, Rev. Eddie Ponder, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church of Kings Mountain and the Shady Grove Choir. Also on the program were Charles Turner, Moder- ator of the Ebenezer Associ- ation, Mount Zion deacons Bruce Mack, Otis Cole and Vincent Roseboro, Dr. William Sims and Assistant Pastor Reymond Gardin who read scriptures, the Mt. Zion Ensemble ‘who presented special music, Joyce Press- ley, Sherita Anderson and Maya Feemster who gave the church history and necrology, Chyne Pollard and Pastor C. A. Feemster. Annie Thombs, a former longtime member of the church, delivered the mes- sage at the 11 a.m. service which was followed by lunch. ; “Sunday was a great day for our congregation,” said Feemster. Former county Accor, past president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, said the church was “truly favored by God.” - Rev.
