Teresa Neil, a teacher assistant at Grover and a veteran, has or- ganized the special service for local veterans each year around Veterans Day to pay tribute and give back to those who have given so much to our nation over the years. Sharing a story of a local Viet- nam War hero, she said that she was reminded that unlike other servicemen they were not thanked when they returned home from war. She asked the Vietnam veterans in the audience to stand. “We appreciate you,” Neil told them. : In addition to all veterans, she thanked the spouses who were left behind at home while their loved ones went off to war. “Spouses played a great part that you didn’t even know you were playing ‘and for that we thank you,” she said. As David McKenzie played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe, students one-by-one posted the colors of each branch of the - armed services. Daniel Bumgarner carried the Army flag, Priscilla Yocis — the Air Force, Holden . Michael Turner — the United States flag, Ty’Zhon Leslie — the state flag, Dallin Campbell — the Marine flag, Nichlas Tinsley — the Coast Guard and Nicholas Stewart car- ried the flag of the Navy. Last but especially not least, Triston Han- non carried the Prisoner Of War — Missing In Action flag for all of the veterans who were unac- counted for after serving their country in times of war. Special music was provided by members of the Kings Moun- tain High School band, whose trumpeters also played “Taps”. Students presented a skit on veterans and the meaning behind the word. They are our heroes." The mayor took the occasion to recognize Kings Moun- tain veteran Frank Burris and his wife, Marie, whose family have sent 18 members to war. The large Burris family was in the audience for one of the largest crowds for a Veterans Day service that began with a parade from the War Memorial downtown to Mountain Rest Cemetery. The Loch Norman Pipe Band and vocalist Shana Adams, Kings Mountain Police Department and Explorer Unit Honor Guard who advanced and retired the colors, prayers offered by Police Chief Melvin Proctor and American Legion Dis- trict 23 Commander Claude Pearson and the pledge to the flag led by Boy Scout Troop 92 added to the impressive serv- ice.
