City fathers took the occasion Tuesday to honor 11 businesses in down- town Kings Mountain for a Small Business Success project that resulted in a Li- brary Services & Technol- ogy Act Grant which hired Business Librarian Nancy Tucker to work with small businesses to improve their confidence, skills and abil- ities. Mayor Rick Murphrey said that Mauney Memorial Library, Main Street, and Planning and Economic Development partnered to- gether on the grant to hire the new Business Librarian at Mauney Memorial Li- brary. “The work of these small businesses is evi- denced through 75 plus consultations and Fussiness Center visits, 10 new logos, three new business Face- book pages created, five business websites created, seven small business sem- inars and eight security and Photo by HALEY WILSON Secret Shopper reports," said the mayor in a procla- mation of recognition and appreciation. The businesses hon- ored w ere: Sweet House Bakery, Ingram's Barber Shop, Chloe's Boutique, The Anointed, Judy's Wild Science, Mommie's and Maw Maw's, The Sub Fac- tory, Gentle Moon Cafe, Everything Under the Sun, Trackside Trader and The Middle Room @BBG. Dredging underway at EE 'mining'site at Moss Lake DREDGING UNDERWAY AT MOSS LAKE — The two photos show city workers dredging in an area on Buffalo Creek known as the city's “mining area” because it was permitted to occur with a state mining permit. While the water was down for spillway repairs city forces removed over 1,000 tons of silt. With the purchase of a new backhoe, the city can be even more proactive, according to Mayor Rick Murphrey. The city's ongoing - dredging program at Moss Lake is underway 10 months of the year, according to Mayor Rick Murphrey and City Planner Steve Killian. But Murphrey said that with the purchase of a new backhoe the city can be even more proactive in this proj- ect to remove silt from the fore-bay area of the 'mining' site on Buffalo Creek. The working area is known as the “mining site” because it was permitted to occur with a state mining permit. While the water was down for spillway repairs city forces removed over 11,000 tons of silt. Killian explained that sediment flows into the lake from its three tributar- ies with the main tributary, Buffalo Creek, being the main source of sediment. This is where the mining operation is which includes a fore-bay that allows the sediment's heavier particles to settle out where Water Department workers scoop them out with a track hoe and move them by a dump truck to a permitted waste site. In addition to the mining site on Buffalo Creek the city has had three private dredging efforts while the water level was lowered for Photo by DILLON LACKEY spillway repairs, the esti- mated value of the dredging work to have been worth over $400,000 if one had to pay a private contractor, said Killian. Rainfall is below nor- mal for this time of year and although the city is letting out the minimum amount of water to flow downstream that it can the water level is about one foot below its pond level. That is more than enough water for the operation of the water plant and needs of all the city's customers whether they be businesses, industries or residents, says Killian.
