St, Matthew's Then Philip Lutheran Church began to speak, and Starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. Acts 8:34-38 Grace to you and peace from God our Father, our Lord and savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Amen. In this section from Acts, we find an Ethiopian eunuch reading the prophet Isaiah. The eunuch is curious about the scriptures and its interpretation. In verse 30, Philip, who has been led by an angel of the Lord to visit the eunuch, ap- proaches him and asks, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The eunuch responds to the ques- tion, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” What a great rev- elation! It’s important to, first, understand what it is that God is calling us to do and how to dis- cern and interpret God’s mission for us as Christians. And, second, it’s important for us to lean on the guidance and direction of God and Eel & Faith KINGS MOUNTAIN Advent Lutheran Church, NALC Member Life Enrichment Center 701 E. The eunuch asks further, con- tinuing his desire to fully under- stand the scriptures. The eunuch wants to know whom the prophet is writing about. Philip revealed the gospel to the eunuch and shared the story of Jesus Christ. How im- portant is it for us to fully under- stand our mission, our vision for ministry and our purpose as disci- ples of Jesus Christ? Then, a little later in the story, the eunuch asks Philip a very im- portant question: “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” The entirety of this story has led the eunuch to this revelation. He has studied the scriptures; he has asked for help and guidance in interpreting God’s word; he has heard the good news that Jesus Christ himself embod- ied; and now, he is asking to fully experience God's love and the gos- pel. What is to prevent him from being baptized? The answer is sim- ple: nothing! The story of Philip and the eu- nuch provides for us a model of how one might come to the faith and a model for how we might be faithful leaders in the world. It is my prayer that as we go about our daily lives, and as we strive to be- come better disciples of Jesus, we recall this story and the pattern of the faith it presents. I pray that each day God grants us the oppor- tunities to go through the same rev- elations the eunuch did and that in the same way he leads us to help others to see the exact same rev- elations, all in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord.
