OOi A 24-team fastpitch softball tournament is set for Friday through Sunday at three parks in Shelby. Hosting the event is the Shelby Comets, a team com prised of some of the top fast pitch stars in North Carolina. Coach Yates Mitchem said play will be held at Shelby City Park, Plaster Field and Op timist Field. A one dollar admission fee per day will permit fans to see any games at any field. 'Two former Kings Mountain High school players, shortstop Tony Leigh and outfielder Gerald Herndon, form the 1-2 hitting punch for the,Comets. Tommy Pruett held down the shortstop post before being in jured two wedcs ago. The Comets are fresh from a fourth place finish in the Atlanta tournament last week but they’ll be hard-pressed to better that standing this week end. Included in the field are seven state champions and the favorite club is United Surgi-- cal Steel, which has won five games this year from last year’s national champion, Qearwater Bombers. Mitchem is depending on strong hitting and the pitching of Jim Stanley and Luther Nicholson to carry the Comets’ hopes. He’s currently ranked as the number one knockout karate instructor in the state and is the only instructor with two students ranked in the top ten in the south. McDaniel is currently ranked number seven in the south and will meet top- ranked Bill Clark of Jackson ville, Fla., for the top-ranking on Oct. 1. Another of Adams’ products, Gaither Brannon of Dallas, is ranked number five and is scheduled to meet second-ranked Gary Felder of Atlanta on the same date. Besides teaching, Adams is also involved in movie stunt work and recently completed a 500-page book on free fighting. He’s already appeared in five motion pictures and is currently working in “Red Neck Miller’’ and “Lorie”. Both will be finished by the end of this year.
