'■'i'A \ mmmArn Photo By Gary Stewart American Leaguers In District Tourney Kings Mountain’s American League Dixie Youth League all-stars opai their quest for a berth in the state tournament Monday at 8:30 p. m. against Dallas in the opaiing round of the District Three tournament at Warlick Park near Tryon. Host Try on meets Bessemer City in the 6:30 opener. First round losers play Tuesday at 6:30 and winners play Tuesday at 8:30. The double-elimination tournament runs through Saturday, July 26. The winner advances to the state tourna ment beginning Aug. 4 in Kings Mountain. Mike Smith and Wayne Bridges, who coached Rotary to the r^ular season cham pionship, are coaches of the team. Players include Wally Davis, Ronald Smith, Jamie Ivey, Bryan Norris, Scott Bowen and Todd Armstrong from Rotary; Leard Keeter, Tim Seay, Jimmy Webster, Eric Spicer and Robert An derson of Kiwanis; Joe Self of Civitan; and Phillip Martin and Ricky Hamrick of Police. The National League all stars will be host for the state tournament and will draw a bye into that event. They’ll open State tourney play on Aug. 4 against the District Four champions. Should the KM American Girls Cage Camp Slated There will be a basketball camp for girls ages 12-17 at the Kings Mountain Junior High School gym Aug. 4-8. The camp is under direction of KMJHS coaches Candy Albergine and Becky Sum- mitt. They will be assisted by Jane Biggerstaff, women’s basketball coach at Sullai’s College in Bristol, Va., and Jayne Arledge, high school player of the year in western North Carolina and the first woman scholarship player ever at Western Carolina University. Cost of the camp is $11. That will include insurance and all equipment needed except tennis shoes. The camp will be broken into two sessions. The mor ning session will run from 9 a. m. until noon and will be for girls 12-14 years of age. The afternoon session will be from 2-5 p. m. and wiE be for ages 15-17. AE {iiases of the game will be covered, the coaches said, including shooting, passing, ballhandling, defense, re bounding and the fast hreak. Each girl will be placed on a team and wiE play one full game each day. There will also be competition in free throw shooting and a one on one contest. AE-star teams wElbechosen at the end of the week. Coaches Albergine and Summitt said all skiE levels wEl be welcomed as the camp is for beginners as well as established players. Registration will be held Friday, July 18, and Friday, July 25, from 10 a. m. until noon at the gym. If interested persons cannot attend they should call 739-3343 during the same hours. Leaguers win the district title, they would open state tourney play on Aug. 4 against the Dis trict Five champions. The other opening day game pits District One against District Two.
