KM went on to win 4-3 In eight Innings and eliminate the Cumberland nine from the double elimination event. Junior Golf Tourney To Be Aug. 8-9 The annual Cleveland County Junior Golf Tour nament will be played Wednesday and Thursday, August 8-9, at Rlverbend Golf Club near Shelby. Entry fee Is five dollars. Any golfers ages 7-17 in terested In playing may see your local pro for an ^>pllcatlon form. Entries must be filed at the Rlverbend pro shop no later than 8 p.m. August 8. The winner’s name will be inscribed on the championship trophy which Is on permanent display In the Rlverbend pro shop. Trophies will be presented to the first three finishers In each age division. Ages 11-under and 12-13 will play nine holes each day and ages 14-16 and 16- 17 will play 18 holes each day. I American League All-Stars Finish 3rd In Dixie Youth Tourney Kings Mountain's American League all-stars flnlshed third In the state Dixie Youth League baseball tournament which was scheduled to end last night at the Bessemer City Dixie Youth park. The local nine lost out In the semi-finals to a strong Columbus County team 11- 1 Tuesday night. The victory put the once-beaten Columbus County outfit In the championship game against unbeaten Cape Fear. The winner of the tournament will advance to the Dixie Youth World Series beginning August 13 In Leland, N.C., near Wilmington. The North Carolina winner will face Tennessee In the opening round at 4 p.m. on the 13th. Kings Mountain managed only one hit In Tuesday’s contest with Columbus County. Steve Plonk started on the mound for KM and was relieved In. the third Inning by Jerry McDaniel. The American Leaguers had battled back through the loser’s bracket after losing their opening round game last Saturday to Cape Fear 4-0 In eight Innings. KM edged West Stanly County 4-3 Sunday and Cumberland County 4- 3 In eight Innings Monday to reach the semi-finals. Kings Mountain’s Jerry McDaniel was hit by a pitched ball with the bases loaded In the top of the eighth Inning Monday night, forcing home the winning run In a 4-3 victory over Cumberland County. Tommy Batchler and Steve Plonk walked and CXimberland County relief pitcher Billy Jackson hit Rodney Ballew to load the bases and set the stage for the winning nui. Lavar Curry came on In the bottom of the fifth Inning In relief of Batchler and picked up the win. Batchler allowed only two hits and Curry one. Kings Mountain grabbed a 1-0 lead In the third in ning when Walter Cooper singled, was wild pitched to second, moved to third on Curry’s groundnut and scored on a wild pitch. Cumberland County tied It with a run In the fourth, then moved ahead 3-1 In the fifth with a pair of uneeu'ned runs. Kings Mountain tied It with a pair In the top of the sixth. Batchler singled sharply to center to lead things off, then Eric Marable followed with a single to light and Plonk reached on a hard-hit single off the third baseman’s glove to load the bases. Ballew’s single plated Batchler and Marable to knot the score at 3-all. Kings Mountain finished with seven hits. Including two each by Batchler and Marable and one each by Cooper, Plonk and Ballew.
