KM Jayvees Unbeaten Kings Mountain High’s Jsyvee basketballers are off and run ning under first-year head coach Danny McDowell. The Little Mountaineers have poated early victories over Bast Oaston and Shelby and at 4:80 this afternoon go after their third straight wrin when they host North Oaston. The Little Mountaineers whipped Bast Oaston, coached by former KMHS athlete Darrell Van Dyke, dS-BS In their opener last Tuesday and on Thursday defeated arch-rival Shelby 07-58. Paul Ingram had a big night against the Warriors, hitting 31 points and collecting 13 rebounds. Todd Wray added 31 points and seven rebounds and Jimmy Brown and Vince Roseboro had five and four assists, respectively. “We were a little tight,” said McDowell, "but we had real good transition against a taller team. Our sone press and fuUcourt man to man pressure kept them off their game.” The Little Mountles led 39-30 at intermission and maintained a lO-to-13 point lead throughout most of the second half. "I was pleased with the team's effort for a first game,” he added. “It’s always nice to win your first game. It builds confidence and pride.” The pride paid oft In the Shelby game, said McDowell, when the Little Mountles blew a big lead and them came back with a strong fourth quarter to win by four. KM’S fuUcourt press led to a 10-polnt halftime lead but In the process of ninnlng up the lead several KM players got Into foul KMHS Cagers Split With Shelby, Host North Gaston Tonight Kings Mountain High’s girls came from behind with a 19- polnt fourth quarter to defeat Shelby 49-41 Friday night In a Southwestern 8-A Conference basketball game at Shelby, but the KM boys fell to their second straight SWC defeat and fourth straight overaU, 02-46. ITie two KMHS teams return home tonight to host North Gaston. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. with a boys Jayvee game. Varsity girls action gets un derway at 6:30. The Mountalnettes’ fourth quarter press and their abUlty to hit the key foul shots was the difference as Coach David Brinkley’s ladies ran their SWC record to 1-1 and overall mark to 2-2. “We played two real fine quarters,” commented Brinkley of the second and fourth periods when the Mountalnettes scored 18 and 19 points, respectively. TTiey were held to eight points in the first period and only four In the third. “If we can ever put together four quarters like those two we’U be In good shape,” he said. Shelby biased to a 12-0 lead before the Mountalnettes went Into a pressing, man-to-man defense. KM scored the next eight points to get back In the ballgame. By halftime, the Moun talnettes had come from behind to take a 26-21 lead but Shelby came back to take a 30-30 edge going Into the final stanza. “Angle Bell came off the bench and did a real fine job for us in the final five minutes,” said Brinkley. Bell scored all six of her points during that span. Diane Williams led the KM attack with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sheryl Goode added 13 points and nine rebounds and Tammy Bolton had eight points and nine rebounds. Kings Mountain, which hit 30 percent from the floor, had a 38- 31 edge In rebounding and a big factor was KM’s offensive rebounding strength. The Mountalnettes pulled down 10 offensive rebounds and scored on six of them. A fourth quarter press almost allowed the winless Moun taineers to catch the unbeaten Lions in the nightcap, but Shelby was tough at the free throw line In the closing minutes. The Lions, who were led by Quinton Lytle's 26 point effort, maintained a healthy lead throughout most of the first three and one-half quarters. But the KM press, led by sophomore point guard Carl Smith, trim med the lead to 47-44 with 2:40 left. That’s when the Lions got tough at the charity stripe and kept their unbeaten string alive. Smith was KM’s only double digit scorer with 19 points. GIRLS GAME KM (49) - Williams IS, Goode 13, Bolton 8, Appling 5, Bell 6, Glass 2. S (41) - Hamrick 17, Smith 9, Whitworth 9, Cannon 6. "Guess how far a truck could carry it.' The railroad is the most efficient user of fuel in the transportation industry Bar j none And the Southern Railway IS one of the most efficient railroads in the country. For instance, on the Southern, this 3.000'tb. load of coal can travel 149 miles on one gallon of fuel How far could a truck carry it on the same amount of fuel? \^ll. the railroad is. on average, about four times more fuel-efficient than trucks. 60 times more efficient than planes, and even more efficient than waterways So it s easy to see that trucks can t cany freight anywhere near as far as rail roads can per gallon of fuel What does this mean for the future? Well. It means that trucks will be used less and less for long hauls More and more products will ride on the Southern, and trucks will be used for distribution at the other end of the line Because, in the coming years, only the railroad will have the energy- efficiency for long hauls.
