{ PiiK** 6-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-TueMlay, December 11, 1979 Competency Scores Failure Rate Up Competency test scores this year for students In Kings Mountain school system fell below last year’s state averages. The percentage of those passing the reading tests this year dropped two points from last year, from 91 to 89 percent. 'Ihe percentage passing the math tests dropped one point, from 87 to 86 percent. Howard Bryant, Director of Inatructl^, said the reason Is that "we didn’t have the right Identification of students needing remediation and our screening procedure was not good enough.’’ Mr. Bryant said that at Kings Mountain Senior High School, 291 Juniors, Including about 17 mentally handicapped students, took the tests for the first time. Of those, 89 percent passed reading comnared to the state’s 92 percent. Elgnty-slx percent passed math compared to 89 percent statewide. more than once, 87 percent passed the reading portion as compared to 90 percent statewide. Of the total 810 students who took the math test, 88 percent passed, compared to 86 percent statewide. Two students had perfect scores on both reading and math testa, said Bryant. ’Twenty-one students received perfect scores In reading and three in math. Bryant said that of 306 students who took the test. In cluding those who hsMl taken It Mr. Bryant said he was pleased that the scores of those who took the tests for the second time Improved significantly. Vandalism Is Reported Several reports of vandalism are under Investigation by the Kings Mountain Police Department. Jeff Carroll, of 44 Chesterfield Courts, reported that someone entered his residence Friday and took clothing and food valued at $106. D.L. Peterson, of P.O. Box 286, reported the window on the driver’s side of his vehicle was broken out while It was parked on Crescent Circle. Three drivers, Mrs. Ruth rang, operating a 1979 Cadillac, Mrs. Ruby Worthen, operating a 1979 Cadillac, and Mrs. Margaret Wilson, operating a 1970 Chevy, reported that while their cars were parked at a residence at 311 Fulton St. Friday that orange Juice was poured on the back windows smd trunks of the vehicles. Cornelia Buchanan, of 010 Landing St., reported theft of a 10 speed bike, valued at $89. Several arrests were made. Ptl. Harry Martin charged Craig Hawkins, 20, of 403 Branch St. with larceny of a night stick from his patrol car which was parked in the rear of the police station. Estimated value to the property was $20. Keith Guinn, 19, of Baker St., was charged with damage of real property. He allegedly damaged a holding cell at the Kings Mountain Police Station Saturday by "breaking a toilet loose from the wall and dropping It on the floor.” Estimated damage to the property was $200. BUI Patterson, 22, of 181 McGinnis St., wm charged with felonious assault. A warrant alledged he attacked Charles Costner of 2000 Mldplnes with a steel pipe on Oct. 10. Costner was reportedly hospitalized for nine days. Bond for Patterson was set at $5,000. Todd Harmon David Baptist Acteens k Serving To Have Rock-A-Thon As N.C. Page Todd Clonlnger Harmon of 102 Fairbanks Court, Mt. Airy, will serve as a page in the N.C. General Assembly during the week of Dec. 10-14. Todd is presently a Junior at Mt. Airy Senior High where he Is an honor student and a member of the marching band. He Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Harmon, formerly of Kings Mountain. He Is the maternal grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Laben June Clonlnger, and paternal grand son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Beam of Kings Mountain. David Baptist Choir To Present Cantata The 30-volce choir of David Baptist Church wUl present a Christmas Cantata "King of rangs”, by John W.
