> 4-IlMaS MOUNTAIN HERALD-TuMaay. luly 28. 1980 Union County Wins State A strong Union County team battled its way out of the loser’s bracket with good pitching and defense to defeat Kings Moun tain 9-0 and 2-0 Wednesday night at Grover’s Brice Harry Memorial Park for the Western State 13 year old Babe Ruth cha- mionship. The two victories earned the Piedmont area all-stars a trip to Staunton, Va., for the Southeastern Regionals. The Union Countians were schedul ed to face the Virginia State Champs in an opening round game yesterday. Kings Mountain, which went into the final round unbeaten, couldn’t get its bats going against the strong Union County pit ching staff. And, when the local nine did get good wood on the ball, the Union County team made superb defensive plays to keep them off the basepaths. Kings Mountain managed on ly three hits in the 9-0 loss to &otty Rushing, a hard-throwing righthander. Richie Cold was l-for-2, Lavar Curry l-for-3 and Barry Philbeck l-for-3. Tommy Batchler started on the mound for KM and took the loss. He got relief help from Philbeck. James Cauthen led a six-hit Union County attack with 3-for-3. Craig Rushing, Scotty Rushing and Johnny Clybum were l-for-3 each. Andy Tomberlin, a polished young lefthander, held the Kings Mountain team to just one hit in the championship game. Bat chler singled in the sixth for the only bingle. Curry went the route for Kings Mountain and gave up four hits. Scotty Rushing was 2-for-3 and James Cauthen and Huey Jordan added one hit each for Union Countv. The Kings Mountain Little Theatre, in cooperation >vith the N.C. Grassroots Art Council, will present an August Bluegrass Jubilee on Saturday August 2 in Barnes Auditorium (Kings Mountain High School) at 7:00 p.m. Performing Will Be The "Roustabouts" "The Leonard McSwain Band," and "Brushy Creek." loe Franklin Will be the Emcee. Tickets are $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 12. Tickets will be available at the door. Union County player slides into third as KM*s Jerry McDaniel awaits throw from outfield.. Kings Mountain Women Golfers To Host Foothills Tournament Kings Mountain Women’s Golf Association will host the Foothills League at Kings Mountain Country Club Tues., Aug. 19th, and plans for the event were announced this week by Margaret (Mrs. H.O.) Williams, chairman and vice- president of the association. Tee-off is at 9:30 ajn. and after golf, the KMLGA will host a cocktail party at the club from 2:30 until 3:30 for all members and golfing guests. Gdfers are asked to sign up at the Pro Shop.
