Babe Ruth All-Stars 1-1 In State Tourney %■ Kings Mountain’s Senior Babe Ruth all-stars won their first game in the State Tournament Saturday at South Iredell High School near Statesville, defeating West Asheville 5-1, but were thrown into the loser’s bracket Sunday when they fell to a strong Clark Griffith team from Charlotte, 9-5. Kings Mountain was schedul ed to face the winner of the Foothills North and Stanley County game last night at 8 o’clock. Charlotte and Alex ander County went into yester day’s play undefeated in the double-elimination event. Ricky Proctor hurled a six- hitter and struck out eight for Saturday’s win. Alan Van Dyke was 2-for-2, played a good defen sive game and was selected as the game’s most valuable player. Kings Mountain scored two runs in the second inning on singles by Van Dyke and Tim Williams and a couple of fielder’s choices. The District Three champions put the game away with three more in the fourth on Van Dyke’s double, a single by Vince Kale, three walks and a passed baU. Charlotte scored sbt runs in the sbith inning to break open a close game Sunday. Kings Mountain scored two in the m' • seventh but they weren’t enough. Burns’ Louie Grigg took the loss. Eric Moore and Phil Beam homered to lead the KM plate attack. ktikmL '‘■H ALAN VAN DYKE 'M RICKY PROCTOR Kings Mountain High’s Markus Hager received the outstanding back award at the annual Western Carolina University football camp last week at CuUowhee. Hager was one of 11 members of the KMHS team to par ticipate in the camp. ‘Everybody did a real good job,” commented KMHS head coach Dan Brook, who worked with the linebackers. "All of our men gave a good effort. They im proved themselves and will be better players because of going to camp.” Kings Mountain’s Mark Russell was runner-up for the outstanding senior lineman award and, according to Brooks, performed better than any other linebacker in camp. “Mark’s really coming along,” said Brooks. “He was the best linebacker there and he played real hard all week.” Kings Mountain’s Chris Champion was honorable men tion for the most outstanding sophomore back and Casey Durham was honorable mention for the sophomore hustler award. CC Women’s Cancer Toumey ^ SetFor August 26 At KMCC >3) y # Area women golfers will tee- off for benefit of the Cleveland County Cancer Fund at a Walter Hagen Women’s Han dicap Golf Tournament Tues., Aug. 26th on the greens of Kings Mountain Country Club. Alex McCallum, local chair man of the benefit, said the win ning team will represent Geveland County in the state tournament Oct. 27th in Pinehurst. Mr. McCallum said that the local tournament will be the first women’s handicap played on the local course for benefit of the Geveland County Cancer Socie ty and urged participation from the Greater Kings Mountain and Geveland County area. Admis sion is SIO per person. No greens fee will be charged but a cart fee of $4.50 per person will be made. All proceeds are earmarked for the Cancer Society. Reservations are requested by teams and McCallum en courages local golfers to select their team members and call him at 739-7401 or 739-7043, Golf Pro Rudy Hayes at the Country Club, 739-5871, Kay Holshouser, executive director of the Geveland County Cancer Society or Mrs. H.O. Williams, 739-2530, the latter who is vice president of the KM Ladies Golf Association. Everybody improved.” Babe Ruth Players Honored Over 170 Babe Ruth players, coaches and supporters attended the annual Babe Ruth League Banquet Thursday night at John Gamble Stadium. State Senator Ollie Harris was guest speaker and helped Babe Ruth officials present trophies to the winning and runner-up teams. Certificates of appreciation were presented to all Babe Ruth team sponsors, including BDF Construction Co., Hayes and Sons Construction, Macedonia Baptist Church, Anvil Knit, Grover Army-Navy, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Dennis’s Pack and Go. Jack Brown served as league president for the year. Other of ficers were Kyle Smith, vice president: Scoop Peeler, secretary; Pat Spearman, treasurer; and Jim White, district commissioner. “I’d like to thank all the of ficers, players, coaches, sponsors and all supporters for their part in making 1980 a successful season for Kings Mountain Babe Ruth baseball,” Brown said. El Bethel Wins Title El Bethel Methodist defeated Macedonia Baptist 15-5 Satur day to win the Kings Mountain Church League Slowpitch Soft- ball Tournament at Macedonia Field. Barry Rikard hurled the win and David Bullock led the El Bethel hitting with 4-for4. Pete Hawkins and Bobby Peterson added 3-for4 each. In earlier games, El Bethel defeated David Baptist 12-7, Temple Baptist 14-2 and Second Baptist 11-9 and lost to Macedonia 14-8. Basketball Play Slated The Kings Mountain Neighborhood Facility Center will again be open the following evenings for open basketball play; Monday, Wednesday and Fri day, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. (un til League Play begins).
