IMO Stamp Design Released From lA The victory of the Overmoun- tain Men ultimately delayed Lord Cornwallis’ sweep of the Carolinas for three months, dur ing which the Continental Army organized a new offensive in the South. General Nathanael Greene, who was to become Continental Army commander of the Southern Department, seized from Cornwallis the military initiative in the Carolinas, an initiative the British general never regained before he was forced to sur render at Yorktown in 1781. The second card, issued in 1979, honored George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary war frontier military leader. It was followed by cards honoring General Casimir Pulaski, who was fatally wounded at the Battle of Savan nah, Georgia, in 1779, and marking the arrival of French forces under Comte Jean- Baptiste de Rochambeau at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1780. All of the cards in the series, in cluding the Battle of Kings Mountain issue, have been designed by David Blossom of Weston, Connecticut. The Kings Mountain postal card is being printed by the off set process at the Government Printing Office. Its dimensions are 3'/2x5‘/2 inches or 88.9x139.7 millimeters. The vignette of the card features one of the frontiersmen standing behind a tree in the foreground, with other memers of the Patriot force appearing to the rear in positions behind fallen timbers. At the upper right, in one line of black type, is “USA lOc.” Across the bottom, in another line of black type, is “Battle of Kings Mountain, 1780.” Requests for first day cancella tions for the Kings Mountain postal card should be addressed to “Kings Mountain Postal Card, Postmaster, Kings Moun tain, N.C. 28086.” Personal checks in the exact amount will be accepted for orders up to the limit of 50 cards. Postage stamps and cash are not acceptable as payment. Orders must be postmarked by October 7. To eliminate the requirement for Postal Service personnel to apply return addresses, and thus speed processing, customers are requested to send self-addressed envelopes of an appropriate size of return address labels with their orders.
