Smith Kings Mountain High’s Sheryl Goode Tuesday signed a full athletic grant-in-aid to attend Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and play basketball for the Golden Bulls. Goode, a 5-11 forward, is the first female athlete from KMHS to receive a full athletic scholar ship. Coach Steve Joyner indicated he will play Goode at the strong forward position. Goode averaged 12.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game for the Mountainettes last year and teamed with Diane Williams in forming one of the top inside combinations in the Southwestern 3-A Conference. Both players were All- Conference. Goode led the team in scoring as a junior with a 13 points per game average and was the team’s most valuable player. She started and lettered in all three of her varsity seasons, was a two-year letterman in track and a starter and letterman her senior year in volleyball. “Sheryl had probably the best shooting touch for a big girl that 1 saw during my two years as a head coach,” Coach David Brinkley said. “One of her strongest assets is that she en- Turn To Pagt 5-A Kings Mountain High’s baseballers will decide their own fate as far as the Southwestern 3-A Conference playoffs are con cerned. The Mountaineers go into the final two games of the season tied for second place and need to win in order to make the league playoffs. The top two teams from the Eastern Division and the two best teams from the West ad vance to the playoffs. The overall winner will then repre sent the SWC in the state 3-A tournament. The Mounties travel to South Point Friday for a 7:30 p.m. con test and return home Tuesday to face East Gaston at 7:30. South Point leads the division with an 8-3 record and East Gaston and Kings Mountain are tied for second with 74 marks. South Point and East Gaston had been tied for the lead going into Tuesday night’s action. South Point won a 5-3 decision over Shelby in 10 innings and East Gaston fell to spoiler North Gaston 134. The Mountaineers lost to both South Point and East Gaston in first round play, but both were close ballgames. They fell to South Point 10-6 in one of their biggest hitting games of the year and they lost to East Gaston 3-0 on a one-hitter by the Warriors’ Mike Featherstone. The Mounties were open Tuesday night, but lost a 5-2 decision to Randolph Henry High of Virginia in a non conference game Monday. Coach Barry Gibson used the non-loop bout to see his re^'rs es in action. TODD BLALOCK ... 3-for-3 in 5-2 loss Randolph Henry scored four of its five runs in the third inning off KM lefthander Darrell Sisk. Despite the loss, Sisk pitched well, scattering only four hits.
