r Thunduy. lanuary T, 1982-KINa8 MOUNTAIN MERALD-Pag* SA Mounties Win In Tourney Kings Mountain’s Moun> tainecrs won both of their games in the Ashbrook Holiday Tour nament iast week, defeating a stubborn Hunter Huss team 60-35 Tuesday and storming past Ashbrook 91-70 Wednes day. The games were the final non conference contests of the year for the Mountaineers, who resumed their rugged Southwestern 3-A Conference schedule Tuesday night. The Mountaineers were slug gish in their opening night win over Hunter Huss, and were sav ed by the inside play of Todd Wray and Demetrius Goode, who scored 19 points apiece. Hunter Huss put up a sticky defense against Kings Mountain’s three outside threats-Carl Smith, Frank Parker and Terrence Blalock- limiting them to a combined total of only 16 points. The Mountaineers still held the upper hand throughout the contest, but never could put the contest on ice. Kings Mountain led 15-10 after one quarter and 36-23 at the half, but the Huskies outscored them 20-12 in the third period to cut the third quarter margin to 48-43. They trimmed the margin to three points halfway through the fourth period but the Mounties held them off. Wednesday night’s showdown with Ashbrook, which was upset by Bums 79-78 in overtime the night before, was no contest. The Mounties jumped out to an early lead and never let up in recording their ninth victory in 10 outings. All five of the KM starters scored in double figures, led by Smith with 23 points. Blalock, Goode and Wray added 14 apiece and Parker scored 10. TUESDAY GAME K. Mtn. (60)-Smith 4, Blalock 6, Goode 19, Wray 19, Parker 6, Brown 2, J. Barnette I, Hager 4. KM’s Kevin Mack On Move For Clemson Mack Aids Tiger Win Kings Mountain can lay claim to a share of the NCAA major college football championship for the 1981 season. Clemson’s Tigers completed a perfect 12-0 season New Year’s Night by defeating Nebraska 22-15 in the Orange Bowl in Miami. The next day, the final AP and DPI polls were released, and the Tigers were voted number one in both. Kevin Mack, a 197-pound sophomore from Kings Moun tain, started at fullback for the Tigers and was a key factor in the school’s first national title. He carried the ball five times for 15 yards, and did an excellent job of blocking for Clemson tailbacks Cliff Austin and Chuck McSwain. He also was a deep back on the receiver team, and although he didn’t return a kickoff, he threw a key block to spring All-American Perry Tut tle on a 50-yard return. Mack also threw the key block-which took out two 74ettiaska defeftders-on Austin’s two-yard run in the first half which erased a 7-6 Nebraska lead and put the Tigers on top for good. Mack was the key rusher in the go-ahead touchdown drive, carrying the ball three times for a total of 11 yards, and picking up two first downs. His second first down run was a three-yard run up the middle which gave the Tigers a first-and-goal at the two, from which point Austin scored on the next play. For the year. Mack carried the ball 76 times for 287 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns. He alternated at the fullback slot all year with Jeff McCall, a junior from Fayetteville, but Mack started the last two regular season games following an injury to McCall, and also got the starting nod in the Orange Bowl. Mack, who set a number of season and game rushing records his senior year at KMHS, is the first Kings Mountain athlete to play for a national championship team, and the second KMHS product to perform in the Orange Bowl. George Harris, a Shrine Bowl quarterback for the Mounties, quarterbacked Duke in the Orange Bowl game in the late 1950’s. Clemson’s national champion ship was only the second in foot ball for the Atlantic Coast Con ference. Maryland won the NCAA crown in 1953. Mack, whose playing weight is 27 pounds more than his senior year here, is big in Clemson’s plans for the next two years. His coach, Mike Reidy, and Clem son head coach Danny Ford, have both been highly pleased with his progress. Industrial Looyp'lay Underway Eaton, Commercial Shearing and Sfiectrum won games in the Men’s Industrial League basket ball action last Wednesday night at the Community Center.
