Lit tle wonder John and his Mas ter looked for fruit among them. When the hypocritical reli gious leaders came to join John’s growing audience and asked to be baptized, John call ed them a “generation of vip ers” and bade them “bring forth fruits meet (fit) for re pentence’' (Matt. 3:7,8). True repentence, with fruit to prove it, was the basic requirement of the kingdom John proclaim ed. This is evident from his declaration: “And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire” (Matt. 3:10% Our Lord appeared proclaim ing the same message as John and also sought for fruit a mong his people (Matt. 7;16;20; 21:33-43). We know, however, that John the Baptist was be headed and Christ crucified. The fruit produced under the law was meager indeed. Even after the resurrection of Christ the majority of His people refused to repent and failed to bring Women's Week Scheduled Pm Ail Beginning sm. But what the law- requires grace provides. It was at this time that God raised up the Apostle Paul, whose “preaching of the cross” show - ed that Christ had not died an untimely death, but in infinite love had come into the world to die for sinners so that they might be saved, by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8,9). Paul’s message was called “the gospel (good news) of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24) and where the law had failed to bring forth fruit, grace brought it forth abundantly. Those who fear that the pro clamation of grace will lead to lax living greatly err, “not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth to repentance.” (Rom. 2:4). God’s grace in Christ, when accepted in true faith, always brings forth good fruit. Thus Paul wrote to the Collossians that his good news was going forth into all the world, adding: “and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also Ln you since,..ye knew the grace of God in truth” (Col. 1:5,6 cf. Rom 6:21, 22). Accept God’s message of grace, trust in Christ as your Savior and He will help you to produce the fruit. Week spring dance. Let all your things be done with charity.” --I Cor. 16:13, 14. It is not always the demands of life that tend to disturb us -- but rather our own fear that we are not adequate to meet these demands in a praise worthy manner. However, the truth is that through the power of God, and our faith in that power, we can cope with any situation or condition that may arise in our lives. When we truly have faith, in the everv abiding presence and power of God, we are then filled with the courage and poise to meet our problems strongly and sen sibly. If we are inclined to hesi tate to meet new persons, new experiences, let us remind our selves of the sustaining and comforting presence of God. And the best way of reminding ourselves is through faithful and conscientious prayer. It is only through prayer that we can keep ourselves in tune with the radiating power of God and, filled with His power, we find ourselves more adequate to meet each demand made upon us. When fear arises within us, and we feel inclined to retreat and avoid meeting an issue or an experience that should be met, let us gird our hearts with the reminder of our inner Spiritual strength and accept the challenge. We are all God’s children, equally beloved by Him, and He is ever ready to extend His helping hand to us, if we but turn to Him in prayer. It is never to late for us to make contact with the Father and to receive His blessings. It makes no difference what mistakes we may have made in the past or how far we may have strayed from our rightful path - God’s loving power is always avail able to us, His beloved children. “God is our refuge an dour strength.” —Psalms 46 ; 1. Sneaker Bennett GREENSBORO “A self imposed guilt feeling is one of the tragedies of our times,” Dr. James H. Laird, minister of the Central Methodist Church, of Detroit, Mich., told the Ben nett College vesper audience on Sunday, marking the opening of the Lenten season. “We condemn ourselves be cause of our failures,” he de clared, “but we need not be cause God knows and extends his love to us in spite of them.” Ecomonicai °g^° High Grade For Every Purpose!
