Negro Migration To Cities Declines, Report Declares WASHINGTON - Negro migration to Ine nation’s cities Is declining, at the same time that inner-city ghettos are spreading, according to a re port issued by Urban America, Inc., and the Urban coalition. The report, which studied U, s, social behavior since the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders issued its report March 1.1968, said r acial polarization of American so ciety is increasing. It was found that whites’exo dus to the suburbs has increas ed sharply in the wake of re cent rioting. On the other hand, ihe rate of Negro increase in central cities reportedly dropped from 370,000 a year, from 1960 to YOU ARE THE DETECTIVE The lifeless body of the pretty young woman lies on the floor of the apartment bedroom, a bullet hole In her right temple, a gun lying on the floor near her outstretched rtght hand. You carefully pick up the gun in a handerchlef, sniff the barrel and verify that It has recently been fired, then you test the safety catch, moving it off, then back to Its original position. Then, after noting the beautiful, low-cut evening gown the young victim Is wearing and her perfectly colfied blonde hair, you turn to her husband, Tom Hudson, who dressed In a blue open-collar sport shirt and sharply-pressed gray slacks Is standing on the other side of the room puffing nervously on a cigarette, “Poor Kathy,” he exclaims. “Why did she have to do this? I thought she was In good spirits. She and I were getting ready to go out for dinner and dancing this evening. She was here in the bedroom putting the finishing touches on her makeup, I thought. . . I was in the other room watching television and waiting for her. Then there was the sound of the shot! i rushed in here . . there she was on the floor. . .dead! Shot herself!” “Do you know of any reason at ail why she should have taken her life this way?” you ask. “Well, our friends will probably tell you that Kathy and I had been having a little trouble lately. . .several quarrels In public. She was always suspicious of me .. . accused me of having a roving eye so far as other women were concerned. It wasn’t true at all, but I couldn’t seem to convince her of this . . .until this evening, when I was sure I had brought her around. Our date tonight was supposed to be In the nature of a reconciliation. . . but . . the young man man shakes his head sadly. “Well,” you now say, “it’s a good story you’ve told me, but not quite good enough. You’ll have to come to headquarters with me and tell us how it really happened that you killed your wife!” Why do you suspect Tom Hudson of murder? SOLUTION In the first place, you found the safety catch of the gun on. A person who shot himself wouldn’t throw the safety catch back on after firing the weapon. Tom Hudson must have in stincitlvely and thoughtlessly pushed it back on after firing the gun at his wife. Also, there is a glaring inconsistency In Hudson’s story. He told you he was watching television in the other room, waiting for his wife to finish dressing for their evening out together, and you found her in evening dress-- but Hudson himself was dressed in sports clothes. 1966 to 300,000 a year, from 1966 to 1968, The percentage of Negro families In central cities head ed by females rose last year to 35 per cent, it was found. lIIS FORD DEALER MIDWINTER Jill RED-HOI&PUSED CAR MNf SALE! m - ——— r ——“ ( SPEUAL me //Te'iW >on , A RI0!A c K|C W '/C GALAXIE 500 4 dr. 6/ '/0 GALAXIE 500 2 dr. 3 !nL.Vv 03 ra .io, v -3, • ea,e>. mg, power brakes air rondi- OO hardtop, power steet -1968 Shelby's Xar... *1095 *1795 is®.. *2695 IN STOCK ®*' 4 ' 2102A 2053A 2115 A '6B KJM' '67 SV, '66 ITAiioZ '66 Tftt 5 “ d 4 STvtrS; *2895 safer. *1995 " - 119 5 *1595 HOT SAVINGS 2i«a 'HOT SAVINGS DURING RED-HOT r , „„ , > r-l FORD Galaxie 500 2 fgm *AA 4 0/ dr, hardtop, V-8, ajto on top service? SATURDAY. MARCH 8. 1&69 Not Ready For Black Mayor? Jackson Doesn't Agree Doesn't ATLANTA - One man who does not share state Rep. Ju lian Bond's pessimism about the election of a Black mayor in Atlanta this year is Maynard H. Jackson, Jr. And Jackson has good reason for thinking differently. He’s running for mayor in a city that’s at least 45 per cent Black. The 30 -year-old Black lawy e r, wh o unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Herman E. Talmadge In the 1068 Demo cratic primary, believes the e lection of a “qualified” Black mayor this year might pre vent voting along purely racial lines in the future. Atlanta’s next mayor, Jack son said, would have to com mand the “respect of the Black community” as well as a por tion of the white community. If “the city doesn’t get a Black mayor at this time,” when a majority of Atlanta’s voters are still white, almost all subsequent mayors will be Black, he predicted. If elected, Jackson would be the first Negro mayor in the South since Reconstruction days. He is one of the few Black people to run for mayor in Southern cities. A Black person unsuccessful ly ran for mayor in Memphis several years ago, and a Negro mayoralty candidate is current ly campaigning in Lake Charles, La. But it is in Atlanta where Black voting strength is be ing tested, as the city moves ROOMS FOR RENT Furinshed rooms for couples as well as single persons. Raleigh’s best. Ph. 833-3048. toward having a Negro majori ty. . White leaders, fearing this eventuality, have proposed that Atlanta annex white suburban areas in order to maintain a white majority. The only ques tions are when this will happen and when they will gain politi cal control of the city.
