More DUI Arrests In 78 Than Ever Before If the Lresenl trend contin ues, state triHipers will arrest more drunkt»n drivers in 1978 than ever belore. Stale High way Ctiinmander John T. Jenkins reported recently. During the first nine months of 1978. the Highway Patrol charged 31,919 motorists with driving under the influence (DUh. 15.6 percent more than during the same period last year Tho 1978 loial is fast approaching the record set in 1972 when troopers arrested 41.241 alcohol-influenced driv ers. Jenkins said. At the end of September, the Patrol had charged 366 more motorists with DUI than for the same period in 1972. leading Jenkins to predict the new record for 1978. Do the additional DUI charg es indicate an increase in (he number of drinking Jrivers on the higi ways? "I duubi this is the case." Jenkins said, 'it is more likely." he continued, "that the increase in DUI charges illustrates the fact that the more troopers 'here are on (he highways, the safer the highways will be." In an effort to reduce alcohol-related fatal accidents, the Patrol instituted an over time program in May, 1978. Fund^ by the Governor s Highway Safety Offl^. the' program places in action an additional 355 highway patrol men each week who volunteer to work overtime for additional pay. Substantial increases in DUI charges have been exper ienced each month since the program began. "Making a record number of DUI charges is not a concern of. the Patrol." Jenkins com mented. "but removing every drunken driver we possibly can from our streets and highways is an integral pan of our total traffic safely program."
