Pablo” that he really didn’t know how the show about a Mexican-American family would go, but he hoped the ratings would be high enough to keep it on the air for a while. Time will tell... Paal Rodriguez, who makes his acting debut as Pablo, the son who would be a stand-up comic, is just that in re^ life. He’s appeared in night clubs around the country and on talk shows. He’s single, was born in Mazatleui, the youngest of five, but now lives in Los Angeles. When he’s not working, Paul likes to read biographies and history books ... Ricky Schroeder spends most of his time in California filming “Silver Spoons,” but he’s still enroll^ in the eighth grade of his Green wich, Connecticut school. He does his school work in Hollywood and every Thursday, it’s sent by Federal Express to his teacher in Greenwich. However, Ricky must take his tests there, so once a month, he flies home to be tested. Rather a rigorous schedule, wouldn’t you say — even for a youngster?... Timothy Van Patten, starring with Lee Van Cleef in NBC’s new series, “The Master” is always confused with his tennis-playing half-brother Dick Van Patten and his tennis pro nephw Vince Van Patten. Says Timothy, “I run in marathons; I coach a high school wrestling team, but when it comes to tennis, I’m low man on the totem- pole.” FOCUS; Jaclyn Smith waited a long time for a child. Now her son Gaston is almost two and she takes him everywhere. He was on the set every day she worked on “George Washington.” Says Jackie, “Being with my child is what life is all about” ... George Pep- pard (“The A-Team”) took time off from work to dine with his two sons Brad and Christopher at a Holl5’wood Bistro... Joan Collins and her blonde British young man are still huggin’ and kissin’ in public ... « DEAR DERRIE: I invited a good friend to have lunch with me at a restaurant. While eating, she mentioned to me that earlier that day, her cousin called her to find out what her plans were for the day. When she told her that she was invited to have lunch with me, her cousin asked if she too could go. My friend told her yes. It turned out that the cousin had to renege on the lunch. My questions are these; (1) Was it right for my friend to say that her cousin could come along? (2) I paid for mine and my friend’s lunch. It was my treat. However, had the cousin come along, would I have been expected to pay her way, too? If not, how could I have said (without causing embar rassment), "I’m going to pay for hers, but not for yours?” CONFUSED DEAR CONFUSED: If your friend was aware ahead of time that lunch was your treat, it was in deed wrong for her to in vite her cousin to come along. If not, she should at least have called you to see if you wouldn’t mind her cousin’s company, at which point you would have been given the oppor tunity to explain that the luncheon was on you and ydu were looking forward to spending time together alone. If, however, the cousin had tagged along, you would have been well within your rights to just divide the bill up three ways and treat your friend another time. * * * DEAR DERRIE: My boyfriend and I have what might be called very strong, independent temperaments. When a battle of wills ensues, it’s usually a frustrating, ex asperating experience. Ad mittedly, at least, I have the ability to just smooth things over by giving up. 1 know he’s not going to give, so I try to live with it. More and more, however, I find myself get ting angrier with him. It seems to take my by sur prise. Sometimes, he’ll make the most innocuous remark and I’ll find myself thinking black thoughts. It amazes me how angrily I react (inwardly only). I wonder why I’m so angry at him. I also ques tion whether my anger is really directed at men in general because of my ex periences with them start ing with childhood. I don’t want to lose this man, so I want to get to the bot tom of this. What do you suggest? SHREW I TEE-Augusta, Ga.-Calvin Peete grips a tee In his teeth and htts trff the fourth hole in the par-three event April 11 prior to the first round of the 1984 Matters Thurs day, April 12. (UPl) IIIHIS Pointers On How A Person Gets Nutrition From Cold Food get How does a person good nutrition when: •It is a cool -20 degrees outside and a cool 15 degrees in the kitchen; •The altitude is so high that water boils at just 110 degrees, if it doesn’t evap orate first; •An individual needs at least 5,000 calories a day merely to replace the calories burned from phys ical exertion; •And the routine is followed daily for three months. It may not be the way to enjoy nouvelle cuisine, but for 16 mountaineers on their way to the summit of Mt. Everest, it works. They are part of the 1984 Ultima Thule Everest expe dition. And though moun taineering is not new to DEAR SHREW: You don’t mention what your experiences with men were so I can only guess. Your anger is probably a combination of your earlier dealings with men and your relationship with your boyfriend. You say you’re both equally stubborn, so the arguments end up with you simply giving in. That’s where your resent ment begins. You’re feel ing angry with your boyfriend because inward ly you don’t feel right about subjugating yourself. I gather you both feel you’re right in any given argument and refuse to see the other’s point of view. Why not table your discussions until you’re both calm? You’ll both be better able to listen emd compromise. As for the general resentment toward men, you might want to talk this out with a counselor. If you get to the bottom of it, you’ll be able to purge yourself of it and therefore pve the other men in your life a feur chance. © 1984, McNaught Synd. Thompson, a Seattle tax consultant and the expedition’s team leader. “Before an expedition I try to gain weight, because I know that during the climb, I’ll lose up to 25 pounds,” he said. “At high altitudes, there is a tendency to lose your appetite. Yet due to the enormous physical exertion required on an expedition, it takes more than double the normal intake of calories to replace the fuel used during the day.” To help ensure good nu trition, the team takes along supplies of nutrient-rich foods, ranging from freeze- dried products to convenient canned fruits and vege tables. “Much of our supplies were donated bv companies to help lessen the cost of the expedition, which is nearly a half-million dollars,” Thompson said. Thompson explained, “At higher altitudes, the body doesn’t digest protein and fats well. And there’s a need for a diet high in carbo hydrates because of the physical activity. “We use vitamin supple ments but the role of nutrition in food we eat is a critical part of the expe- ditibn.” Eating on the run for most of us means grabbing a quick hamburger or sand wich. Give Mom A Treat Let Her Brunch In Bed This year, let children go into the kitchen for a special gift to pamper Mom. The gift, of course, is edible—a brunch they’ll all cook together with Dad’s help. Teamwork and careful planning is the key to serving this Mother’s Day brunch, but it can be prepared “solo” with advance preparation. Buttermilk pancakes take on a festive look when the batter is poured into ginger-, bread cookie cutters. Extra batter can be poured from a measuring cup with a thin spout to spell MOM. Decorate the pancake stacks with edible raisin eyes, peanut buttons, coconut hair and a cranberry orange sauce skirt. Make a cranberry milk shake with chopped almonds, rich vanilla ice cream and whole berry cranberry sauce. Mixing cranberry orange saucei with applesauce makes a colorful side dish for the pancakes and takes only a few minutes. To avoid any last-minute rush in the kitchen, prepare some items in advance.
