Labor Day
A Fun Time
VIRGINIA BEACH <AP) - The
focus of the coming Labor Day
weekend may have shifted from the
beachfront to Norfolk State
University, say college students.
Some students may really want to
go to the beach, but their main focus
is going to be here,” said Chad Smith,
Norfolk State’s Student Government
Association president.
Every Labor Day weekend for the
past 11 years, students from the East
Coast's predominantly black colleges
and universities have come to this
resort city. In 1989, police and young
people clashed in a series of riots that
caused more than a $1 million in
damages to beachfront businesses.
Labor Day 1990 was a highly
structured, carefully watched event
that brought fewer young people to
the beach. Many complained about
the restrictions placed on events.
Although Norfolk State’s
“SpartanFest” is geared toward the
university’s students and is not
supposed to compete with Virginia
Beach, word-of-mouth is already
making it the center of Labor Day
activities throughout Hampton
Roads, Smith said.
Meanwhile, hotels along the
Oceanfront report few bookings for
Labor Day weekend. At this time in
1988, innkeepers were reporting brisk
reservations for Labor Day. Bookings
also were strong in 1989 but they fell
off last year.
