Operation Desert Share Underway Hi* millionth pound of “Operation Deaert Share" food was delivered to the Food Bank of North Carolina recently. "We never expected this amount of food from the Gulf War,* says Greg Kirkpatrick, executive director of the fbod bank. “When it started arriving last August, we were told we would receive several truckloads. So far 30 tractor-trailer loads have come in, and before it’s all over with we expect another 50." The influx of food comes at a good time for the food bank. Due to the tight economy, requests for food as sistance are at an all-time high, and food-industry donations are down. Operation Deaert Share is the largest donation ever received by Second Harvest National Network of Food Banks. More than 150 mil lion pounds of Desert Share food is expected to be donated by the end of February. Locally, the loads have included beef stew, barbecue beef, bacon, luncheon meat, macaroni, cake and biscuit mixes, grits, C-ra tions, Meals-Ready-To-Eat, condi ments, sugar, tea, juices and canned vegetables. “Historically, the food industry is our primary partner in the mission of redistributing surplus food to the poor," says Kirkpatrick. “Private food companies donate the bulk of the food we receive. But the Desert Share donation illustrates the role our government can play in posi tively affecting the lives of our nation’s poor and relieving unneces sary suffering. It’s a shame it took a war to mobilize these resources for these people. Sufficient funding for government food assistande pro grams is essential if weare going to begin to solve the larger problems of adequate employment, education. Dr. Broadus S.
