John Cudworth continues very ill at the Norfolk Neneral Hospital in Norfolk. Marcia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurie Daughtry of Norfolk is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Baum. Mr. and Mrs. Coolidge Basnight and son of Norfolk were week end guests of relatives here. Mrs. Gilbert Tillett and baby are vistiing Mrs. Tillett’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Spencer in Nor folk. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hardesty and Mrs. Lennie Tillett were visitors in Elizabeth City Tuesday. M. R. Daniels spent Sunday in Norfolk as guest of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Voshelle. Mr. and Mrs. Lynton Daniels have returned to their home in Norfolk after visiting relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. William Forke and son Irving Hughs of Norfolk vis ited Mrs. Forke’s parents here this week, Mr. and Mrs. Theof Wes cott. Mrs. Arnold Daniels received medical treatment in Elizabeth City Saturday. She was accom panied by her daughters, Shirley and Brenda. Harry Baum of the Coast Guard was the week end guest of his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Baum. Rev. and Mrs. C. W. Guthrie. Arnold Daniels, Mrs. Dallas Tillett and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Meekins attended the District Conference of the Methodist Church held at ■New Hope Wednesday. COLINGTON PERSONALS Mr .and Mrs. Carl Gard of Nor folk and their two children spent several days visiting friends and relatives in Colington and Kill Devil Hills. They stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Weightman Beasley for the week end. Mrs. Mickey Daniels of Wan chese and Mrs. John Garrison, the former Dorothy Stetson, visited friends here Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Garrison and children, who are visiting relatives in Wanchese, are enroute to Florida from Texas. The Colington Community Club held its monthly ineeting Monday evening, May 5, in the Colington school building. Mrs. Dorothy' Beasley was elected secretary treasurer to take the place of Miss Zelda Gaimel, who resigned. An amendment to the constitution was proposed and will be voted upon at the next meeting. Linwood Beasley spoke on behalf of a school com mittee about the need for a gym nasium at the Kitty Hawk school. Methods of raising the needed funds were discussed. A bingo par ty will be held at the Colington school Tuesday evening, May 13, at 8 o’clock. RETURNS FROM FLORIDA Mrs. L. D. Midgett of Buxton was in Manteo Wednesday on her return from a 3,000 mile trip during the past three weeks. She visited her son Chesley in At lanta, Ga., and spent some time in Florida, visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis Midgett, former residents of Buxton, now living at New Smyrna where Mr. Midgett, a former Coast Guard officer is now connected with the Florida State Department of Conservation and Development. Taking over the leadership of the Chapter the new Worthy Ma tron, Mrs. Beatrice Meekins gave a lovely and inspiring message and pledged her service and loyalty to the Chapter. Little Jane Barrett sang “The Loveliest Night of The Year,” and Carlyle Jone sang “Beautiful Dreamer.” The Associate Matron presented the new Matron with gifts from the Installing Officer, Mrs. Maude Baynar Foye, a Bible from some members and a salad plate from some friends. The Hall was beautifully decora ted with flowers and greenery car rying out the chosen colors of the Matron. At the close of the the meeting delicious refreshments were served to the visitors and members. RECITAL THURSDAY NIGHT IN MANTEO AUDITORIUM Mrs. Victor Meekins will present her piano pupils and the Manteo Methodist choir in a recital Thurs day evening, May 15, at 8:15 in the Manteo school auditorium. The first half of the program will be given by the piano students. - The second half of the program will be presented by the choir, with Mrs. Meekins, conducting and Mrs. Ren nie Williamson acting as accom panist. The choir, which heretofore I has presented only sacred numbers, will branch out this year and pre sent, in addition to a group of sacred choruses, a group of secu lar songs arranged for chorus. The public is invited to attend. WOMAN’S CLUB DINNER TO BE HELD AT PARKERSON’S The regular meeting of the Manteo Woman’s Club will be held May 20, ratter than on May 13 as previously announced. The meeting will be the annual club dinner at Parkersons Hotel on Nags Head. All club members are asked to meet at the Community Building at 6:30 p. m., and those who have cars plan to drive so transportation may be furnished for those who have none. All who plan to attend the dirtner should make reserva tions by calling Mrs. Mabel Clark not later than Monday, May 19. C-PL. RAY BATEMAN NOW AT CAMP PICKETT, VIRGINIA Camp Pickett, Va.—Cpl.’ Ray E. Bateman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rommie S. Bateman, Route 2, Col umbia, N. C., is becoming acquaint ed with combat supply and com munications problems during Op eration Logex-52, now underway at Camp Pickett. His unit, the 313th Signal Op erations Battalion from Ft. George i Meade, Md., has set up 33 tele type circuits and complete tele phone and radio facilities for use during the exercise. Corporal Bateman entered the Army in January, 1951. SOCIAL HOTEL OWNER TO WED CAPT. RICHARD IRELAND Mrs. Elizabeth Parkerson of Manteo and Nags Head, will leave Norfolk Airport via National Air line, Friday, May 9 to join Capt. Richard B. Ireland where their wedding will take place May 15 at 7:30 p. m. in the Blue Room of the George Washington Hotel, Jack sonville, Fla. Dinner will be served for a few immediate friends. After the wedding, Capt. and Mrs. Ireland will go on an extend ed motor trip. They will reside at their new apartment, adjoining the Parkerson Hotel at Nags Head. Mrs. Florine Hooper and little granddaughter Jackie, spent the wee kend in Norfolk with relatives. COLINGTON HOME CLUB The regular monthly meeting of the Colington Home Demonstra tion Club was held Wednesday, April 23, at the home of Mrs. Mar tha Dough at Kill Devil Hills, with 11 members present. The topic of the meeting was “Eat to Control Your Weight” which included a discussion of the Basic Seven Foods. The “black horse” was won by Mrs. Myrtle Dough. The host ess served ice tea, deviled eggs, bread, salted nuts and pie. The May meeting will be held May 28 at the home of Mrs. Myrtle Dough. FAITH HAZEN TO WED LEONARD S. GASSEN Mr. and Mrs. Alvin L. Hazen of Wanchese, N. C., announce the en gagement of their daughter, Faith Arlene Hazen, to Leonard S. Gas sen, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Gassen of Richland Center, Wisconsin. Mr. Gassen is in the Navy, at present stationed at Duck, N. C. No date for the wedding has been set. MR., MRS. CLIFTON CREDLE ENTERTAIN SET BACK CLUB Cake and ice cream with straw berries was served Friday night when Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Credle entertained their set-back club. Mrs. J. H. Lupton won high score prize for the ladies and Al bert Gaylord for the men. Miss Clarine Midyette won the bingo prize. Other members present were G. A. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Credle, and Mr. and Mrs. Rhonda Ricks. They had as their guests Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gaylord and Miss Evy Midyette. The club will meet again May 16, with Miss Evy Midyette. CARTWRIGHT-WARREN Mrs. Eloise Mann Warren of Manteo became the bride of Harold Cartwright of Grandy at five o’clock Saturday afternoon, May 3, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Allen Mann, in Manteo. The ring ceremony was performed by Rev. H. R. Ashemore before an arrange ment of mock orange, roses and snowballs. The bride, who is the daughter of Mrs. D. E. Mann and the late D. E. Mann of Manteo, wore a costume of navy blue crepe with navy and white accessories and a shoulder corsage of red roses. Mrs. Herbert Gard of Manns Harbor, niece of the bride, was ma tron of honor. She wore a navy blue dress wjth navy and white accessories and a shoulder corsage of white carnations. Prior to the ceremony John H. Long, accom panied by Mrs. E. R. Wescott, sang “Because” by D’Hardelot. Immediately following the cere mony Mrs. Mann honored the couple with a reception. The table was laid with a cloth of cream colored rayon with pastel flower design. The three-tiered wedding cake, topped with miniature bride and bridegroom, was cut by the bride. Mrs. Mann presided at the punch bowl, and was assisted in serving cake, nuts and mints by her sister, Mrs. C. R. Evans. Ar rangements of roses were used in profusion throughout the house. Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright are making their home for the present on the airport road near Manteo. DARE COUNTY MEN FLYING BIGGEST NAVY SEAPLANE Attached to Patrol Squadron 44, first fleet unit to fly the Navy’s newest seaplane, the twin-engined Martin Marlin, are two Manteo, N. C., area men, James G. Meekins, aviation ordanceman, second class, USN, son of G. E. Meekins and husband of Mrs. Myra P. Meekins, all of Stumpy Point; and William H. Midgett, aviation machinist’s mate, third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair Midgett of Box 153, Manteo, and husband of Mrs. Eunice M. Midgett of Coin jock. James Meekins has recently re ceived an advance in rate to Ord nanceman First Class. The Squadron is a unit of the Atlantic Fleet Air Wings, anti submarine patrol bomber com mand, based at Norfolk, Va. They began operating with the 36-ton Marlin late in April. The huge submarine stalker, first aircraft designed and built expressly for anti-submarine war fare, is equipped with the most powerful tactical radar of any U. S. aircraft It will gradually replace the PBM Mariner seaplane now being used extensively by the Navy. Connell is visiting her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Smith. Mrs. Rennie Williamson return ed Sunday night from Wilmington, where she attended the annual Meeting of the N. C. Federation of Music Clubs. Mrs. Williamson was re-elected to her office as state chaplain. WILKINSON HOME CLUB HAS SPLENDID MEETING Since everyone is so interested in the cancer drive the highlight of the regular meeting of the Wilkinson Home Demonstration Club was the showing of two films put on by the American Cancer Society. Thanks were given Mrs. John Winfield for bringing them to the club so they could be shown. Mrs. Fer n ie Laughinghouse, President, called the meeting to order. Devotions were given bj Mrs. Boswell Cox. Minutes were read by the secretary, Mrs. J. M. Hudson. A favorable report was given by the treasurer, Mrs. Hugh Crumpler. After the business session, Mrs. Rita Preston, Home Agent, showed slides and spoke on “Fitting Ready Made Dresses.” Most everyone has to alter a dress at some time so the demonstration was very help ful. Guests present were Mrs. John Winfield and Mrs. John Tankard of Yeatesville and Mrs. Fred La tham and Mrs. Marian Dilden of Belhaven. Mrs. Latham brought to each member of the club a well-rooted* mock orange shrub. Each one ex pressed their appreciation of them. During the social hour Mrs. M. 0. Ratcliff and Mrs. Stanley Russ, co-hostesses served delicious straw berry shortcake. FAIRFIELD SOFTBALLERS DEFEAT SLADESVILLE, 8-2 The girls and boys softball teams of Fairfield went to Sladesville Tuesday afternoon for a double header with Slades ville teams. The girls did not play but the Fairfield boys were the winners again, scoring 8 runs and Sladesville 2 runs. The scor ing of the previous game which was played here was Fairfield 12 runs and Sladesville 10.
