PAGE EIGHT BAPTIST ACTIVITIES IN THE TOWN OF MANTEO The first week of December is ■observed as the week of prayer for foreign missions throughout the Southern Baptist convention, and it has been observed by the mis sion societies of the Manteo Bap tist Church. The woman have held prayer meetings each day under the direction of Mrs. David Pear sall, Mrs. W. E. Cholerton, Mrs. Bruce Etheridge, and Mrs. George Quidley. The Wednesday Aeeting was combined with the regular prayer service, and under the di rection of the pastor. A film strip portrayed what has been accom plished through the offerings for foreign missions received at this time. The goal for the 'offering this year is ?6,800,000. The Junior Girls Auxiliary held their prayer service Monday; the Royal Ambassadors Thursday and the Intermediate Girls Auxiliary Friday. In preparation for this week, study courses have been held for all groups. The Junior G. A.’s and R. A.’s studied the book “Ming Li,” which was taught by Mrs. W. E. Cholerton; the Intermediates and the R. W. A.’s studied about the work in Malaya under Mrs. Cholerton. Supper was served after the course to the juniors by Mrs. George Quidley and to the intermediates by Mrs. Roy King and Mrs. Jack Tillett. C. i » MANTEO PERSONALS Mrs. Susie Malco had as her guests Sunday her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester- Brown and their son, Wynder, of Perrin. Va. Mrs. Malco and her guests visited Mr. and Mrs. Marion Malco in Point Harbor during the day. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Pearce spent Thanksgiving in Arlington, Va., with their daughter, Mrs. Margaret Brigidini. They were joined there by Mrs. Pearce’s sister, Mrs. Madge Barbour of Ardmore, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Parker had as their Thanksgiving guests Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Luton and son, Thomas Bailey, of Elizabeth City; Mr. and Mrs. Don Braswell and daughter, Laney of Raleigh; and Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Parker and five children of Elizabeth City. Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Parker and children of Elizabeth City and Miss Ruby Crees also of Elizabeth City, visited Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Crees during the Thanksgiving hol idays. Returning to Chowan College, Murfreesboro, this week after a visit in their homes were McCoy Tillett, Jr., Merle Meekins, Jr., Becky Moulson, Clarence L. Gibbs, Lloyd Wescott and St. Clair Bas night, Jr. Sidney Shaw returned last week end from Orlando, Fla., where he spent a week’s vacation visiting his mother. C. T. Daughtry, U. S. A. F., of Omaha, Nebr., visited his brother in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Billy O’Neal tKis week. Miss Martha Raye Rogers of Louisburg College, Louisburg, under the direction of Mr. Choler ton. Their supper was served by Mrs. Bill Swindell, Mrs. Rudolph Peele and Mrs. Jack Clifford. In all courses, many maps, pictures and curios were used and the tables were decorated with minia ture palms and animals creating a typical appearance. The women are having their study Monday; Dec. Bth on the book “Into a New World” by Winston Crawley. This study will be from 7 to 10 in the church. The various chapters will be discussed by Mrs. Pearsall, Mrs. Melvin Jackson, ftfrs. Cholerton, Mrs. Sanford Stallings and Mrs. George Quidley. There will be a coffee break part way under the direc tion of Mrs. Bill Swindell. JERRY BRINKLEY CAHOON of Wanchese, who were married at six o’clock Thanksgiving afternoon in the Wanchese Methodist Church. Mrs. Cahoon is the former Patricia Lee Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Parker of Wanchese. Mr. Cahoon is the son of Sheriff and Mrs. Frank M. Cahoon of Manteo. spent Thanksgiving week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Rogers. Mrs. Will Hofler and children, Linda and Betty, visited in Wood land during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. John Allen, Mrs. Gus Etheridge and Jack Cahoon, Jr., visited Mrs. J. G. Swindell in Belhaven Thanksgiving Day. Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Atkinson of Hyde Park, N. Y., are visiting Mrs. Atkinson’s mother, Mrs. T. D. Etheridge, who was visited also Thanksgiving holidays by her daughter, Miss Natalie Etheridge, of the faculty of William and Mary College, Norfolk. Mrs. Henry Twiford of Norfolk has been visiting her sister, Mrs. L. S. Parkerson, who returned to Norfolk for a visit with her. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Midgett and children, Nancy, Louis, Jr., and Robert, of Norfolk spent Thanks giving with Mr. Midgette’s par ents Mr. and Mrs. Leo Midgette. Mrs. T. D. Etheridge, Misses Natalie and Annie Etheridge and Mrs. Leo Midgette spent Friday in Tyner with Mrs. Helen Chappell. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Dowdy and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wilson and son, John, spent Thanksgiving in Greenville, S. C., with Mr. and Mrs. Cary Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Alvah H. Ward have returned from a vacation of three weeks, during which time they visited in Miami, Fla., and in Savannah, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Brown of ECC, Greenville, spent the Thanks giving vacation with Mrs. Brown’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Cholerton. KILL DEVIL HILLS PERSONALS Mrs. Lonnie Jones and daughter, Claudia, recently flew to Seattle, Washington, to spend a few days with Mr. Jones, who docked there for a short while after a long trip on the Pacific with the Merchant Marine. Mrs. Thomas Chears, Jr., and daughter, Nelson, returned last week from Edenton, where they had visited Mrs. Chears’ parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Powell, for sev eral weeks. Johnston, District Health officer that McGinnis Audi torium at East Carolina College will be the scene of the “2ND DISTRICT RURAL HEALTH WORKSHOP CONFERENCE” on Thursday morning, December 11, 1958 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Dave Whichard of Greenville Daily Re flector is Conference Chairman, working with Dr. Vernon Jeter, Plymouth, N. C., Rural Health Chairman for the 2nd Medical So ciety District. A similar conference was held in Wilson two years ago. This year’s workshop type pro gram will feature four major top ics: 1. Nursing Education, 2. Costs of Medical Care, and 3. Mental Re tardation How it Affects the Family, and 4. Adequate Care of the Aged. Key resource persons will be present to give up-to-the minute data in each of these areas of health needs. The program will open with a general session then divide into the four discussion groups. A summary session will conclude the program at 12.30 p.m. Persons attending will have their choice of discussion groups to attend. It is suggested at least four leaders from each community in the twelve county Second Medical Society district area attend so that they can pool ideas and recommendations back home following their December 11th conference.
